Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, March 10, to Sunday, March 16.

In-Person Events

Fifty Boxes of Earth

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Now through Sunday, March 16
Where: Park Square Theatre

Catch the world premiere of Fifty Boxes of Earth presented by Theater Mu. The story follows Q as they move to a new neighborhood with the titular boxes of dirt and start cultivating fantastical plants in the community garden, while “one man’s distrust grows even as his young daughter reaches out in friendship.” This play is a response to Bram Stoker’s Dracula and features both dance choreography and puppetry. Tickets are $10 to $45 with pay-as-you-are pricing. Some dates include artist talkbacks and mask requirements; see the website for more information.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Now through Sunday, March 23
Where: Guthrie Theater

The beloved Shakespearean classic A Midsummer Night’s Dream makes its return to the Guthrie stage. This play of mischief and love is the playwright’s most popular work and has enchanted countless audiences with its intertwining tales unfolding when the mortal and magical worlds meet during the Summer Solstice. Tickets are $32 to $92. Check out the event page for information on special performances featuring tailgating, postshow discussions, and youth activities.

Free Yoga at Union Depot

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Monday, March 10 and Wednesday, March 12 at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Union Depot

Get your yoga mat and water ready for a free yoga class at the beautiful Union Depot in St. Paul. This event is taught by Studio 9-to-5 in the Depot’s Waiting Room or in the North Plaza when the weather is nice. Monday’s class focuses on a total body sculpt workout while Wednesday’s class is a less-intense general yoga for all levels. See the event page on the Union Depot website for more information.

Dear Evan Hansen

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Tuesday, March 11 through Sunday, March 16
Where: Ordway

“Meet Evan Hansen, a high school student who always feels like he’s on the outside looking in.” When a therapy exercise gets misconstrued and he gets entangled in lies, Evan finds a chance to fit in. This Tony Award–winning musical is a contemporary look at life, how we live it, and digital-age connections. Tickets start at $45.

Speculations Event: Anne Waltz Reading

What: Books
When: Wednesday, March 12, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: DreamHaven Books & Comics

Author and artist Anne Waltz will be stopping by DreamHaven for a free reading. She wrote the novel Swedish Lutheran Vampires of Brainerd and worked on both the video game EverQuest II and the webcomic iammatthewian. Waltz is currently working on a cyberpunk novel that features pop stars.

Nerd Nite: March Edition

What: Educational, Food & Drink
When: Wednesday, March 12, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Black Hart of Saint Paul

The organizers of Nerd Nite invite you out for a night of “nice drink, good company, and some cold. hard. facts.” Those cold, hard facts come in the form of monthly “nerdy TED talks” in which community members dive into a topic they are passionate about. March’s event has presentations on video game music, pile driving, and a secret third presentation.

Walker Art Center’s Art Club

What: Arts
When: Thursday, March 13, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Walker Art Center

Get creative at the Walker Art Center’s weekly Art Club during the museum’s free Thursday nights. Explore different mediums and ideas through themed activities designed to be accessible for all ages and levels of experience. Materials are free while supplies last. This week’s theme is “Good Luck Talismans.”

Mni Sota Akítho Festival

What: Convention
When: Friday, March 14 through Sunday, March 16
Where: InterContinental Hotel Saint Paul Riverfront

Celebrate Indigenous art, knowledge, tattoos, and music at the Mni Sota Akítho Festival! The weekend will feature live performances, hands-on workshops, a vendor market, and tattoo sessions with artists from around the world. Musical guests include Stella Standingbear, Supaman, Joe Rainey, and more. Anyone wanting to get a tattoo done during the festival will want to book a session directly with the artist; see website for details. Standard passes start at $80 for the weekend or $30 for day passes; discounted youth passes are available and there is free entry for anyone under 4 years old or over 60 years old.

North Star Roller Derby Season 19 Bout 4: Mystery of the Mothjammer

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Friday, March 14, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Quincy Hall

Come on down for a roller derby extravaganza at North Star’s new venue! This bout’s theme is “Mystery of the Mothjammer,” and it’s the final bout of the home-team season. In addition to the roller derby action, enjoy halftime entertainment, adult beverages in the beer garden, and the annual silent auction. Tickets are $20, and there are discounted youth tickets available.

Spotlight Science: Brain Power

What: Science & Tech
When: Saturday, March 15, at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Bell Museum

Spotlight Science is an event series that brings the current science happening at the University of Minnesota to the community through interactive experiences and special guests. This month is all about neuroscience. Activities include demonstrations with real brains, neuroscience storytellers, hands-on crafts, the planetarium show Mysteries of Your Brain, and more! This event is included with regular admission, which is $12–$21, or free for museum members and University of Minnesota students.

Zoo After Hours

What: Educational, Nightlife
When: Saturday, March 15 at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Minnesota Zoo

This is your opportunity to experience the Minnesota Zoo after hours without children around. The 18+ event will feature trivia, games, photo ops, a costume contest, and a silent dance party, as well as extended hours for the Tropics Trail, Discovery Bay, and the Treetop Trail (weather permitting). Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Tickets are $10–$20.

Exhuma Screening

What: Movies
When: Saturday, March 15, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Eagles Club 33

Trilingua Cinema presents a special $5 screening of the Korean horror blockbuster Exhuma. The story follows a group of experts that are led to sacred ground housing an ancestral grave while investigating a mysterious illness. The film is rated R and will be shown in Korean with English subtitles.

Wicked Sing-Along XXL Drag Brunch

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Sunday, March 16, at 11:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Where: Quincy Hall

Enjoy a themed drag performance and a delicious meal at one of Flip Phone’s popular brunch events. This week will have you defying gravity with a sing-along tribute to Wicked. Costumes (or pink and green looks) and singing along are highly encouraged. Tickets are $22.60, and attendees must purchase the buffet during the event.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, March 16, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female-identifying (including trans women/femme) and nonbinary nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Vilification Tennis Makes Out with the Blarney Stone

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Sunday, March 16, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Strike Theater

Vilification Tennis, a local structured-improv show focused on insult contests, returns for a night of “sticking it to all things Ireland, but particularly Americans who boast about their Irish heritage one day of the year while ingesting enough green food coloring to paint a horse.” Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

Queer Book Club

When: Tuesday, March 11, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Virtual event

Discuss new books that are written by queer authors or that explore queer topics at this free monthly book club hosted by the Hennepin County Library. This month’s selection is Upright Women Wanted by Sarah Gailey. Copies of the ebook and audio versions are available through the library website, while physical copies are available for checkout at the East Lake and Ridgedale libraries. Next month’s read will be Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers.

John Morrissey: Five Points Street Brawler Turned State Senator

When: Tuesday, March 11, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Virtual event

In 19th-century New York, the legendary John Morrissey went from being a street fighter to holding seats in Congress and the state Senate. This webinar will take deep dive into his history, including his rise to bare-knuckle boxing Heavyweight Champion of America, his rivalry with gang-leader William “Bill the Butcher” Poole, his role in the creation of the Saratoga Race Course, and his death. Tickets are $12.

Twin Cities Geek Art Club

The Twin Cities Geek art club meets every Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the Twin Cities Geeks Discord. Weird and Wonderful Wednesday Watchalongs

Smithsonian Associates Streaming Series–The Psychology of Nostalgia

When: Thursday, March 13, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Virtual via Zoom

The Smithsonian Institution, home to famed museums and world-class research centers, is bringing educational programs and art courses online for all to enjoy. At this event, Professor of Psychology Jeffrey Green will discuss the psychology of nostalgia, examine the connection between senses and emotions, and explore the question of whether this type of mental time travel is a healthy or maladaptive emotion. General-admission tickets are $30, and a discount is available for members. Sci-fi/Fantasy Book Club

Discuss new and interesting sci-fi and fantasy titles at this free book club hosted by the Hennepin County Library. March’s read is Dracula by Bram Stoker. Next month’s read will be Kaikeyi: A Novel by Vaishnavi Patel.

Book Discussion of Bookshops and Bonedust by Travis Baldree

The Rivendell Discussion Group of the Mythopoeic Society will be discussing Bookshops and Bonedust by Travis Baldree. The book was a finalist for the 2024 Mythopoeic Fantasy Award and is set in the same universe as Baldree’s Legends & Lattes. This event is free and open to all. Next month, the group will discuss The Society of Guenevere by Deborah K. Vleck.
