Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, March 24, to Sunday, March 30.

In-Person Events

Fearless Five: Power

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Weekends, now through March 30
Where: Historic Mounds Theatre

Enjoy a night of one-act plays centered around the theme of power, with five plays, five directors, five playwrights, and an ensemble of actors. Each play incorporates the theme differently—expect laser tag, cats, office dynamics, and more! Check out the event page for this year’s lineup. Tickets are $26.50.

The Effect

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Now through Sunday, March 30
Where: Jungle Theater

When two people fall for one another during a clinical trial for a new antidepressant, they end up questioning whether what they feel is real or just a side effect, while their romance causes unexpected dilemmas for the trial and its supervising doctors. This razor-sharp play exploring the for-profit pharmaceutical industry is written by Lucy Prebble, whose previous writing credits include the TV series Succession and the video game Destiny. Tickets are $15 to $95 with pay-as-you-are pricing. Some dates include additional activities or mask requirements; see the website for more information.

Triassic Parq: The Musical

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Now through Sunday, April 13
Where: LUSH Lounge ad Theater 

Life finds a way in Triassic Parq, a retelling of Jurassic Park from the dinosaurs’ view, in “which chaos erupts when one dino in a female clan spontaneously becomes male.” This comedic ride of a musical explores themes of identity, sex, and religion through a new twist on a familiar classic. Tickets are $27–$37 and the show is recommended for ages 18 and up.

Free Yoga at Union Depot

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Monday, March 24 and Wednesday, March 26 at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Union Depot

Get your yoga mat and water ready for a free yoga class at the beautiful Union Depot in St. Paul. This event is taught by Studio 9-to-5 in the Depot’s Waiting Room or in the North Plaza when the weather is nice. Monday’s class focuses on a total body sculpt workout, while Wednesday’s class is a less-intense general yoga for all levels. See the event page on the Union Depot website for more information.

Jonathan Stroud Author Appearance for The Legendary Scarlett and Brown

What: Books, Family
When: Monday, March 24, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Wild Rumpus

Join author Jonathan Stroud to celebrate his latest book and finale of the Scarlett and Brown series, The Legendary Scarlett and Brown. His previous acclaimed series include Lockwood and Co. and the Bartimaeus Sequence. The event will conclude with an author signing. Tickets are $14.01, which includes a $10 voucher usable the night of the event towards any of Stroud’s books.

An Evening with Joe Boyd: And the Roots of Rhythm Remain

What: Books, Music
When: Monday, March 24, at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Cedar Cultural Center

Legendary producer Joe Boyd will be presenting words and music from his latest book, And the Roots of Rhythm Remain: A Journey Through Global Music, which explores the back-and-forth influences between musical traditions from around the world and Western pop culture. Boyd’s previous book is his memoir White Bicycles: Making Music in the 1960s. During his six-decade career, he was the founder of the UFO Club, a prolific record producer for artists like Pink Floyd and REM, the co-creator of the documentary film Jimi Hendrix, and the host of the popular Joe Boyd’s A-Z podcast. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 on the day of the show.

Minneapolis Institute of Art Public Tours: Inspired by Books

What: Arts
When: Tuesday, March 18, at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

Take a specially curated tour through the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s collection as inspired by books. Each month’s tour will focus on a different book for inspiration, with March exploring When Women Were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill. Tours meet in the General Mills Lobby on the first floor.

Books & Bars: Demon Copperhead

What: Books, Food & Drink
When: Tuesday, March 25, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Urban Growler

Books & Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by former Minnesota Public Radio producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food, and social lubrication.” The book being discussed this month is Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. Next month’s book is The Great Gatsby graphic novel by artist K. Woodman-Maynard.

Teen Writers’ Guild

What: Meetup, Books
When: Tuesday, March 25, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Dayton’s Bluff Library

Every fourth Tuesday, teen writers can get together at the Dayton’s Bluff Library for encouragement, peer critiques, and opportunities to develop their craft. This meetup is free, with snacks and hot drinks provided.

Virtual Tour of Minnesota’s 64 State Parks in 30 Minutes

What: Educational
When: Tuesday, March 25, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Westwood Hills Nature Center (St. Louis Park) and Virtual via Zoom

Learn about Minnesota’s state parks and what makes each one special, and maybe get inspired for future adventures, during this free 30-minute presentation hosted by the Minnesota Rovers Outdoors Club.

Red Hot Chilli Pipers

What: Music
When: Wednesday, March 26, at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Ames Center (Burnsville)

“Bagpipes with attitude. Drums with a Scottish accent.” The Red Hot Chilli Pipers are ready to rock the Ames Center with a mix of Scottish tunes and rock anthem covers. Expect a lot of flair from this nine-piece ensemble of bagpipers, guitarists, drummers, and keyboardists. Tickets start at $54.05.

Walker Art Center’s Art Club

What: Arts
When: Thursday, March 27, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Walker Art Center

Get creative at the Walker Art Center’s weekly Art Club during the museum’s free Thursday nights. Explore different mediums and ideas through themed activities designed to be accessible for all ages and levels of experience. Materials are free while supplies last. This week, the club is hosting guest artist Matthew Eng (“Monster Matt”) with Minneapolis store Odd Mart.

Anime Detour

What: Convention
When: Friday, March 28, through Sunday, March 30
Where: Hyatt Regency Minneapolis

Anime Detour is a nonprofit cultural, educational, and entertainment convention dedicated to Japanese animation and comics managed by Anime Twin Cities. Expect a weekend full of special guests (too many to list here!), cosplay, room parties, art, screenings, gaming, and a charity auction. Weekend passes are $75 for adults, with reduced youth rates available; see the website for full details.

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show

What: Film, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, March 29, at 11:30 p.m.
Where: The Parkway

Watch a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the “longest-running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ shadow cast for the showing, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition. Doors open at 11:30 p.m. and tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door.

Moulin Rouge Drag Brunch

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Sunday, March 29, at 10:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.
Where: Union Rooftop

Enjoy a themed drag performance and a delicious meal at one of Flip Phone’s popular brunch events. This week get ready for a spectacular tribute to Moulin Rouge. Costumes and singing along are highly encouraged. Tickets are $20.28, and attendees must purchase an entree during the event.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, March 30, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female-identifying (including trans women/femme) and nonbinary nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Rise to the Challenge: Book Talk with Marlene Johnson

What: Books
When: Sunday, March 30, at 2:00 p.m.
Where: American Swedish Institute

Join Marlene Johnson for a reading and discussion of her book, Rise to the Challenge: A Memoir of Politics, Leadership, and Love. The book is “a courageous portrait of dedication, leadership, and unwavering faith in the public good” told through stories of her personal and professional lives, including her time serving as Minnesota’s first woman lieutenant governor. This event is free, but advanced registration is required.

Kraftwerk Multimedia Tour 2025: 50 Years of Autobahn

What: Music
When: Sunday, March 30, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Orpheum Theatre

Kraftwerk is celebrating 50 years of their influential album, Autobahn, with a tour! The iconic band helped to popularize electronic music around the world through their early use of synthesizers, computerized rhythms, and robotic voices. Along with the music, this tour will also feature multimedia visuals and performance art. Tickets start at $72.10.

If Looks Could Kill: Dangerous Beauty Throughout the Ages

Discover the weird and dangerous beauty products and procedures of the past “that were more likely to cause you to blow up rather than glow up,” the societal conditions that allowed them to flourish, and the emergence of organizations that fought for consumer protections in the industry. Tickets are $12.

Weird and Wonderful Wednesday Watchalongs

Enjoy a free screening of an obscure film with Miss Emmy Martian and other cinephiles on Discord every Wednesday night.

Smithsonian Associates Streaming Series–AI and Art Authentication: The Future of Forensics

When: Thursday, March 27, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Virtual via Zoom

The Smithsonian Institution, home to famed museums and world-class research centers, is bringing educational programs and art courses online for all to enjoy. At this event, learn about how machine learning is transforming the process of authenticating artwork, the fight against forgeries, and how they’re being used in investigations of works thought to be created by Rembrandt, Leonardo, Van Dyck, and Raphael. General-admission tickets are $25, and a discount is available for members. Check out the streaming series webpage to see the many other upcoming events this week.
