Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, March 3, to Sunday, March 9.

Although inclusion in This Week in Geek is not an official endorsement of any event or organizer, we do our best to feature events that appear safe, responsible, and consistent with our mission and values. In-Person Events

Fifty Boxes of Earth

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Now through Sunday, March 16
Where: Park Square Theatre

Catch the world premiere of Fifty Boxes of Earth presented by Theater Mu. The story follows Q as they move to a new neighborhood with the titular boxes of dirt and start cultivating fantastical plants in the community garden, while “one man’s distrust grows even as his young daughter reaches out in friendship.” This play is a response to Bram Stoker’s Dracula and features both dance choreography and puppetry. Tickets are $10 to $45 with pay-as-you-are pricing. Some dates include artist talkbacks and mask requirements; see the website for more information.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Now through Sunday, March 23
Where: Guthrie Theater

The beloved Shakespearean classic A Midsummer Night’s Dream makes its return to the Guthrie stage. This play of mischief and love is the playwright’s most popular work and has enchanted countless audiences with its intertwining tales unfolding when the mortal and magical worlds meet during the Summer Solstice. Life of Pi

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Tuesday, March 4 through Sunday, March 9
Where: Orpheum Theatre

Shipwrecked in the Pacific Ocean, 16-year-old Pi perseveres in a lifeboat with a tiger, orangutan, hyena, and zebra in this Broadway show based on the massively popular book of the same name. Expect stunning visuals and puppetry, which earned this play multiple Tony Awards, including for best scenic design of a play and best lighting design of a play. Tickets start at $55.40.

Come from Away

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Wednesday, March 5 through Saturday, March 8
Where: Ordway

This musical tells the remarkable true story of nearly 7,000 passengers who became stranded in a small Canadian town when planes were diverted during and after the 9/11 attacks. What starts as an uneasy clashing of nerves and culture grows into trust and friendships as music soars into the night. Tickets start at $45.

Minneapolis Home and Garden Show

What: Convention
When: Wednesday, March 5, through Sunday, March 9
Where: Minneapolis Convention Center

The Minneapolis Home and Garden Show returns for its 91st year! The show features a variety of home improvement exhibits, displays, and programming, as well as live music. Special guests include Chelsea and Cole Deboer (Down Home Fab), Michael Smith Boyd (Luxe for Less), Christopher Straub (Project Runway), and more. Regular adult tickets are $15, and there are numerous discounts and promotions available; see the website for details.

Games + Grains

What: Gaming
When: Wednesday, March 5, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Insight Brewing

Join 2D Con on the first and third Wednesday of every month for a night of games and drinks at Insight Brewing. There will be both tabletop and video games available to play.

Walker Art Center’s Art Club

What: Arts
When: Thursday, March 6, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Walker Art Center

Get creative at the Walker Art Center’s weekly Art Club during the museum’s free Thursday nights. Explore different mediums and ideas through themed activities designed to be accessible for all ages and levels of experience. Materials are free while supplies last. This week’s theme is “Gallery Sketching.”

Pulitzer Prize Finalist Mai Der Vang with Chaun Webster

What: Books
When: Thursday, March 6, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: East Side Freedom Library

Poet Mai Der Vang will be discussing and reading selections from her new book, Primordial. The collection explores “the collective trauma and resilience experienced by Hmong people and communities, the ongoing cultural and environmental repercussions of the war in Vietnam, the lives of refugees afterward, and the postmemory carried by their descendants” through the plight of the endangered saola. Vang will be joined in conversation by Minnesota Book Award–winning poet Chaun Webster. This event is free, and copies of the book will be available for purchase.

MarsCon 2025: Gone Rogue

What: Convention
When: Friday, March 7, through Sunday, March 9
Where: Hilton Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport Mall of America

MarsCon has a little bit of something for everyone. Whether your preferred geek flavor is anime, gaming, cosplay, books, film, or science, you’re in for a treat. This year’s theme is “Gone Rogue.” Come for special guests, such as actor Jason Carter (Babylon Five) and author Ozgur K. Sahin (Brethren of the Spanish Main). Stick around for informative panels, crafting events, musical performances, anime screenings, a masquerade, and more. Check the website for schedule and registration details. Rates vary, but the whole weekend costs $70 for adults.

Scream It Off Screen

What: Movies
When: Friday, March 7, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: The Parkway Theater

Scream It Off Screen is a short-film contest with an audience interaction element! Come together with other film nerds in one of the Twin Cities greatest revival theaters. Audiences will cry out “Gong!” or “Let it play!” in order to determine which films will be shown in full. Tickets are $13 in advance or $19 at the door. RaptureMN Presents: The Onesie Ball

What: Nightlife, Cosplay
When: Friday, March 7, at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Ground Zero

Dress up in your favorite onesie or kigurumi and break out your flow-dancing props for this EDM dance night hosted by RaptureMN. Featured DJs include Devyn Key, DJ Eve, Palm Butta, and Jen Blackburn. In addition to the dancing, there will be projected visuals, aerial acrobatics, and fire performances. Don’t worry if you’re not a fan of onesies but want in on the fun—organizers also welcome and encourage alternative looks with animal prints, LEDs, fursuits, or body paint. Tickets for this 21 and over event are $15.

The Comic Show

What: Comics
When: Saturday, March 8, at 9:00 a.m.
Where: Valley Creek Mall

Come on down to the Valley Creek Mall for a free show with over 45 tables of comics and collectibles! This event is put on by the Minnesota Comic Exchange and will run for six hours.

SpongeBob SquarePants Drag Brunch

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, March 8, at 10:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.
Where: Crave

Enjoy a themed drag performance and a delicious meal at one of Flip Phone’s popular brunch events. This week, head down to Bikini Bottom and a pineapple under the sea to celebrate SpongeBob SquarePants. Costumes and singing along are encouraged. Tickets are $20.28 and attendees must purchase an entrée during the event.

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in STEM

What: Science & Tech, Educational, Community
When: Saturday, March 8, at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Science Museum of Minnesota

The Science Museum of Minnesota is celebrating diversity and creativity in STEM through the Science Is All of Us event series, which highlights the careers and contributions of female and BIPOC STEM professionals. Each event is included with regular museum admission and will feature demonstrations, hands-on activities, performances, and presentations. This installment celebrates Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in STEM with the University of Minnesota Department of Chemistry, the Masonic Cancer Center, Asian Media Access, the Cultural Society of Filipino Americans Dance Troupe, and more.

North Star Voices: Spirits Dancing

What: Educational, Books
When: Saturday, March 8, at 2:00 p.m.
Where: Minnesota History Center and Virtual via Zoom

Learn more about Minnesota’s night skies with photographer Travis Novitsky. He has been photographing the night sky for decades and the co-producer and narrator of the documentary film Northern Nights, Starry Skies, and his photographs are featured in the book Spirits Dancing: The Night Sky, Indigenous Knowledge, and Cultural Connections to the Cosmos. The free event will feature a talk, Q&A session, and book signing; copies of the book will be available for purchase.

The Big Lebowski Bash

What: Trivia, Gaming, Cosplay, Food & Drink
When: Saturday, March 8, at 3:00 p.m.
Where: Brühaven

Celebrate 27 year of The Big Lebowski with a free night of themed trivia, Wii bowling, a costume contest, and music curated by DJ Sam Baeker of Transmission. There will also be “Modestly Priced Beer Receptacles” that get you a discount on refills during the event as well as White Russians, an exclusive beer release, and food truck fare available for purchase.

Next Chapter Booksellers Manga Club

What: Comics
When: Saturday, March 8, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Next Chapter Booksellers

Discuss a new manga title every month at Next Chapter Booksellers. This free manga book club also provides tasty Japanese snacks and discounts on manga purchases in the store. Saturday Night Space Opera

What: Gaming
When: Saturday, March 8, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Join Saturday Night Space Opera on the second Saturday of every month for an evening of sci-fi role-playing games. This is a free event, all rules will be taught, and no materials are required—just RSVP ahead of time to snag your spot.

Family Day: Together

What: Arts
When: Sunday, March 9, at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

Family Day is a free monthly event at the Minneapolis Institute of Art that gives the young and the young at heart an opportunity to check out performances, hands-on activities, tours, and more. This weekend’s theme is “Together.”

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, March 9, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female-identifying (including trans women/femme) and nonbinary nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Vinyl and Book Market

What: Music, Books
When: Sunday, March 9, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Blackstack Brewing

Sip on your favorite Blackstack Brew while enjoying an afternoon of crate digging and book shopping with local vinyl vendors and bookstores. There will also be food available for purchase from Angry Line Cook.

Mario Day

What: Gaming, Music, Trivia
When: Sunday, March 9, at 2:00 p.m.
Where: Can Can Wonderland

Celebrate Mario Day (March 10) a little early with Can Can Wonderland! There will be live video game music, open gaming, and trivia with prizes. Attendees are encouraged to wear costumes and bring along their Nintendo Switch consoles. This event is included with regular admission of $16. (Read: “How to Throw a Super Mario Party”)

Virtual Events

The (Not-So) Young Adult Book Club

When: Monday, March 3, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Virtual event

Adults can embrace their love of young-adult literature at this book club hosted on the first Monday of every month by Red Balloon Bookshop. Members choose the monthly book, receive discounts, and have opportunities to read advanced reader copies (ARCs). Anyone interested in joining should head over to the event page for more information, including how to sign up.

A Century of King Kong: Examining a Cinematic Legacy

What: Movies
When: Monday, March 3, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Virtual event

Explore the evolution of a cinematic icon. This webinar will take a deep dive into the larger-than-life character of King Kong as depicted in three films over nearly a century, including the 1933 original, the 1976 remake starring Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange, and Peter Jackson’s 2005 blockbuster. Expect comparative analyses of scripts, performances, special effects, and musical scores, as well as some behind-the-scenes stories that shaped each production. Tickets are $12.

Virtual Pub Quiz Trivia Night

Get your trivia on from the comfort of home with Geeks Who Drink’s free online trivia night. Prove your mettle, and maybe learn a little something!

Free Virtual Yoga at Union Depot

When: Tuesday, March 4, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Virtual via Zoom

Get your yoga mat and water ready for a free yoga class streamed from the beautiful Union Depot in St. Paul. This event is taught by Studio 9-to-5. See the event page on the Union Depot website for more info, as well as additional in-person yoga events.

Winter Wednesday with a Scholar

Join the Ramsey County Library and a guest scholar for an educational dive into their specialty on Wednesdays throughout the winter season. This week, Carl Elliott will discuss “Medical Experimentation and the Price of Saying No.”

Twin Cities Geek Art Club

The Twin Cities Geek art club meets every Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the Twin Cities Geeks Discord. Weird and Wonderful Wednesday Watchalongs

Smithsonian Associates Streaming Series–Wild Wings: Fascinating Pollinators and Their Stories

When: Thursday, February 27, at 5:45 p.m.
Where: Virtual via Zoom

The Smithsonian Institution, home to famed museums and world-class research centers, is bringing educational programs and art courses online for all to enjoy. At this event, naturalist and educator Liana Vitali will share stories about fascinating pollinators from around that world, including those that enable us to enjoy chocolate, tequila, and lavender. General-admission tickets are $30, and a discount is available for members. Check out the streaming series webpage to see the many other upcoming events this week.
