Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, March 31, to Sunday, April 6.

In-Person Events

Triassic Parq: The Musical

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Now through Sunday, April 13
Where: LUSH Lounge ad Theater

Life finds a way in Triassic Parq, a retelling of Jurassic Park from the dinosaurs’ view, in “which chaos erupts when one dino in a female clan spontaneously becomes male.” This comedic ride of a musical explores themes of identity, sex, and religion through a new twist on a familiar classic. Tickets are $27–$37 and the show is recommended for ages 18 and up.

Free Yoga at Union Depot

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Monday, March 31, and Wednesday, April 2, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Union Depot

Get your yoga mat and water ready for a free yoga class at the beautiful Union Depot in St. Paul. This event is taught by Studio 9-to-5 in the Depot’s Waiting Room or in the North Plaza when the weather is nice. Monday’s class focuses on a total body sculpt workout, while Wednesday’s class is a less-intense general yoga for all levels. See the event page on the Union Depot website for more information.

St. Paul Chess Enthusiasts

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Tuesday, April 1, 5:00 p.m.
Where: BlackStack Brewing

Enjoy chess or want to learn? Join other chess enthusiasts of all skill levels at this weekly gathering. Bring a chess set, if you have one. Beginners welcome. More opportunities to play chess are available from Uptown Chess or Twin Cities Chess Club.

44th Annual Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival

What: Movies
When: Thursday, April 3, through Sunday, April 13
Where: Various venues

The 44th annual Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival (MSPIFF) is a celebration of international cinema that will feature over 200 films and shorts from around the world. This year features a tribute to Ang Lee through a series of events with the director, including a screening of Brokeback Mountain with preshow conversation as well as a screening of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. For anyone looking for films with Minnesota connections, take a look at Folktales, Speak, and Or Something. Check out the website for the full list of films. Tickets are $17 per film for general admission; all-access passes and discounts are also available.

Walker Art Center’s Art Club

What: Arts
When: Thursday, April 3, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Walker Art Center, Cargill Lounge

Get creative at the Walker Art Center’s weekly Art Club during the museum’s free Thursday nights. Explore different mediums and ideas through themed activities designed to be accessible for all ages and levels of experience. Materials are free while supplies last. This week, the club is hosting guest artist Andy Jacobs for a hands-on wet-felting workshop. Materials provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Stories at the Station: Nina Hamza

What: Books
When: Thursday, April 3, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Union Depot

Emerging Minnesota author Nina Hamza will read selected passages from her new book Samira’s (Worst) Best Summer followed by a Q&A session with the audience. Free admission.

Pangea World Theater Presents: Rhinoceros

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, April 4, through Saturday, April 19
Where: The Southern Theater

Over three acts, everyone except our central character, Berenger, turns into rhinoceroses. The show exploring themes of conformity, fascism, social responsibility, mob mentality, philosophy and morality. Tickets are $15–$50.

Scream It Off Screen: Short Film Competition

What: Movies
When: Friday, April 4, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: The Parkway Theater

Scream It Off Screen is a short-film contest with an audience interaction element! Come together with other film nerds in one of the Twin Cities greatest revival theaters. Audiences will cry out “Gong!” or “Let it play!” in order to determine which films will be shown in full. Tickets are $13 in advance or $19 at the door.

April Star Party

What: Educational, Science & Technology
When: Friday, April 4, at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Bell Museum

Observe deep space objects through a telescope (outdoors, weather-permitting). Indoors, explore hands-on activities and learn from experts about the night sky. Admission is free for this event but does not include a planetarium show ticket.

13 Gears

What: Convention
When: Saturday, April 5, and Sunday, April 6
Where: Squirrel Haus Arts

13 Gears is a steampunk-inspired maker’s market with local artisans, live music, and fun contests. Free and family-friendly.

First Saturday Science: Space

What: Science & Technology
When: Saturday, April 5, at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Jason R. Carter Science Education Center

Kids of all ages can explore space and the universe through fun laboratory experiments and hands-on activities. Learn about solar systems, planets, moons and stars. Free admission. For those unable to attend the in-person event, join the email list to get copies of the activity guides to learn at home. Some videos are also available on YouTube after the event.

First Free Saturday at Walker Art Center

What: Arts
When: Saturday, April 5, at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Walker Art Center

Enjoy the Walker Art Center’s current exhibitions, check out a film from the museum’s collection, or participate in family-friendly creative activities. Free tickets can be reserved in advance.

Spring Fling Romance Book Fair

What: Books
When: Saturday, April 5, at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Inbound BrewCo

This book fair includes local romance bookstores, crafters selling themed wares, author readings and signings, plus take-home crafts and trivia contests. It’s a day full of love, creativity, and community.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, April 6, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female-identifying (including trans women/femme) and nonbinary nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Tales of a Vicious Mockery

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Sunday, April 6, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Fox Den Board Game Cafe, Burnsville

Tales of a Vicious Mockery is a fully improvised Dungeons & Dragons comedy show where audience interaction shapes the story, so no two shows are the same. Your wit is your strongest weapon. Suitable to experienced gamers and newbies alike. Tickets are $18–$29, and parking is free.

Twin Cities Geek Art Club

The Twin Cities Geek art club meets every Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the Twin Cities Geeks Discord. Weird and Wonderful Wednesday Watchalongs

Enjoy a free screening of an obscure film with Miss Emmy Martian and other cinephiles on Discord every Wednesday night.

Smithsonian Associates Streaming Series–The Mesopotamian Riddle: Cracking the Code of Cuneiform

What: Educational
When: Wednesday, April 2, at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Virtual via Zoom

The Smithsonian Institution, home to famed museums and world-class research centers, is bringing educational programs and art courses online for all to enjoy. At this event, learn how a swashbuckling archeologist, a British officer turned diplomat, and an Irish rector worked together to unlock the secrets of cuneiform, the language that had preserved the stories, science, and secrets of ancient Mesopotamia for millennia. Presented by Joshua Hammer, author of The Mesopotamian Riddle. General-admission tickets are $25, and a discount is available for members. Doris Kearns Goodwin on Leadership in Turbulent Times

When: Thursday, April 3, at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Virtual webinar

Doris Kearns Goodwin, author and world-renowned presidential historian, presents a one-hour lecture about leadership in difficult times throughout U.S. history and puts current events in historical context. Based on her book, Leadership: In Turbulent Times, Goodwin provides perspective on how the U.S. has experienced difficult times before and emerged stronger. Free, but registration is required.
