Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, April 14, to Sunday, April 20.

Although inclusion in This Week in Geek is not an official endorsement of any event or organizer, we do our best to feature events that appear safe, responsible, and consistent with our mission and values. In-Person Events

Pangea World Theater Presents: Rhinoceros

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Now through Saturday, April 19
Where: The Southern Theater

Over three acts, everyone except our central character, Berenger, turns into rhinoceroses. The show explores themes of conformity, fascism, social responsibility, mob mentality, philosophy and morality. Tickets are $15–$50.

Free Yoga at Union Depot

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Monday, April 14, and Wednesday, April 16, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Union Depot

Get your yoga mat and water ready for a free yoga class at the beautiful Union Depot in St. Paul. This event is taught by Studio 9-to-5 in the Depot’s Waiting Room or in the North Plaza when the weather is nice. Monday’s class focuses on a total body sculpt workout, while Wednesday’s class is a less-intense general yoga for all levels. See Union Depot’s event page for more information.

Saint Paul Board Game Group

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Monday, April 14, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Lake Monster Brewing

Connect with others who enjoy board games. All skill levels welcome. Learn new games or bring some games to share and teach.

Minneapolis Institute of Art Public Tours: Inspired by Books

What: Arts
When: Tuesday, April 15, at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

Take a specially curated tour through the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s collection as inspired by books. Each month’s tour will focus on a different book for inspiration, with April exploring Tom Lake by Ann Patchett. Tours meet in the General Mills Lobby on the first floor.

St. Paul Chess Enthusiasts

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Tuesday, April 15, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: BlackStack Brewing

Enjoy chess or want to learn? Join other chess enthusiasts of all skill levels at this weekly gathering. Bring a chess set, if you have one. Beginners welcome. More opportunities to play chess are available from Uptown Chess.

Silent Book Club

What: Books, Food & Drinks
When: Tuesday, April 15, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Inbound Brew Co.

Grab your current read, pick up a drink, and join other book lovers for a night of quiet reading in good company at Inbound. Beer and nonalcoholic drinks will be available for purchase.

Twin Cities Auto Show

What: Convention
When: Wednesday, April 16, to Saturday, April 19
Where: Minneapolis Convention Center

Compare hundreds of new vehicles in every category, including ones that cannot be found on dealer lots, all under one roof. Features include Electric Vehicle Neighborhood, Luxury Lane, Camp Jeep, Unique Classic Cars, and more! Tickets are $10–$17; kids 10 and under are free. Twin Cities Playtest

What: Gaming
When: Wednesday, April 16, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Noble Robot and Virtual via YouTube

This playtest event run by the Twin Cities chapter of the International Game Developers Association highlights games that are currently in development. Participants (either online or in-person) can play the games, demo their projects, or simply watch along to see what the community has cooking. Trash Film Debauchery: Vibrations

What: Movies
When: Wednesday, April 16, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Trylon Cinema

Long-running local cult-cinema group Trash Film Debauchery returns to the Trylon for a screening of Vibrations, a 1996 film in which a rising rock star loses both hands but finds success with cyborg replacements. Tickets are $5.

Pundamonium: The Minneapolis Pun Slam!

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Wednesday, April 16, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Club Underground at the Spring Street Tavern

Pundamonium is a pun slam—a competition of wordplay with 10 contestants, each given two minutes to make puns based on prompts they are given ahead of time. A few lucky audience members act as judges for the night, with their top four pun slingers going head to head in a final pun-off. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Walker Art Center’s Art Club: Album Cover Designs

What: Arts
When: Thursday, April 17, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Walker Art Center, Cargill Lounge

Get creative at the Walker Art Center’s weekly Art Club during the museum’s free Thursday nights. Explore different mediums and ideas through themed activities designed to be accessible for all ages and levels of experience. Materials are free while supplies last. This week, celebrate Record Store Day by customizing your own album cover.

Minicon 58

What: Convention
When: Friday, April 18, thru Sunday, April 20
Where: DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel (Bloomington)

This year’s Minicon features author Wesley Chu, the music of The Faithful Sidekicks, and astronomer Michael Busch. There is something for everyone and all ages. Admission ranges from $20 to $90; advance registration has closed, but on-site registration is available by check or cash only (ATM available).

Anime Rave

What: Nightlife
When: Friday, April 18, at 9:00 p.m.
Where: Lush Lounge and Theater

Dance to the beats of your beloved anime tunes in this 21+ spectacle filled with electrifying anime vibes, sponsored by #WeTouchGrass. Tickets are $38.40.

Ultimate Collectibles Warehouse Sale

What: Comics
When: Saturday, April 19, starting at 9:00 a.m.
Where: Hopkins VFW

Browse thousands of comic books, video games, action figures, trading cards and more! Purchases are cash only.

Prince Drag Brunch

What: Theater & Comedy, Food & Drink
When: Saturday, April 19, at 10:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.
Where: Union Rooftop

Enjoy a themed drag performance and a delicious meal at one of Flip Phone’s popular brunch events. This week, “Let’s Go Crazy” with a tribute to Prince. Costumes and singing along are highly encouraged. Tickets are $20.28, and attendees must purchase an entree during the event.

Puzzling Adventures Scavenger Hunt

What: Trivia, Family
When: Saturday, April 19, starting at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Puzzling Adventures (St. Paul)

Follow a self-guided tour to a series of locations where you must answer a question or solve a puzzle to get the next clue. Adventures are crafted to appeal to all ages, and almost all are wheelchair and stroller friendly. Race throughh for the quickest time or savor the experience at your own pace. Tickets are $39.99 per team.

Minneapolis Time Travelers Vintage Expo 2025

What: Convention
When: Saturday, April 19, starting at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Minneapolis Convention Center

The largest traveling retro vintage market in the US includes the best in vintage clothing, home goods, retro-inspired handmade, and more! Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.

STEAM Saturdays: Sound Day

What: Science & Technology
When: Saturday, April 19, at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Pavek Museum

Explore the science of sound through various hands-on activities. Museum admission of $6–$11 includes access to this event.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, April 20 at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female-identifying (including trans women/femme) and nonbinary nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Vilification Tennis Gets High

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Sunday, April 20 at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Strike Theater

Vilification Tennis, a local structured improv show focused on insult contests, returns for a night of comedy celebrating recreational weed. Tickets are $15 in advance, or $20 at the door.

GPS Creative Night

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event and a great opportunity to work on projects in great company.

Virtual Pub Quiz Trivia Night

Get your trivia on from the comfort of home with Geeks Who Drink’s free online trivia night. Prove your mettle, and maybe learn a little something!

The Mads Are Back: A Night of Springtime Shorts w/MST3K’s the Mads

When: Tuesday, April 15, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Virtual via YouTube

Continuing the tradition of Mystery Science Theater 3000, Trace Beaulieu and Frank Conniff will riff on a batch of vintage shorts to celebrate springtime. Tickets are $10 and include access to a replay if you cannot make the live event.

The Twin Cities Geek art club meets every Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the Twin Cities Geeks Discord. Weird and Wonderful Wednesday Watchalongs

Enjoy a free screening of an obscure film with Miss Emmy Martian and other cinephiles on Discord every Wednesday night.

Graphic Novel Book Club

This month’s discussion at Bel Canto Books’ book club is on The Hidden Life of Trees: A Graphic Adaptation. The group is open to fans of graphic novels as well as those who are curious. This event is free, but registration is required.
