Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, April 21, to Sunday, April 27.

In-Person Events

Free Yoga at Union Depot

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Monday, April 21, and Wednesday, April 23, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Union Depot

Get your yoga mat and water ready for a free yoga class at the beautiful Union Depot in St. Paul. This event is taught by Studio 9-to-5 in the Depot’s Waiting Room or in the North Plaza when the weather is nice. Monday’s class focuses on a total body sculpt workout, while Wednesday’s class is a less-intense general yoga for all levels. See the event page on the Union Depot website for more information.

Saint Paul Board Game Group

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Monday, April 21, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Lake Monster Brewing

Connect with others who enjoy board games. All skill levels welcome. Learn new games or bring some games to share and teach.

Minneapolis Institute of Art Public Tours: Inspired by Books

What: Arts
When: Tuesday, April 22, at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

Take a specially curated tour through the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s collection as inspired by books. Each month’s tour will focus on a different book for inspiration, with April exploring Tom Lake by Ann Patchett. Tours meet in the General Mills Lobby on the first floor.

Midwest Bookish Fest

What: Books
When: Tuesday, April 22, at 3:00 p.m.
Where: Plymouth Community Center

Find your next read at Midwest Bookish Fest. There will be local bookshops, attending authors, book-related vendors, and more. The event will also be collecting book donations for Paperback Exchange, a local bookshop that lost most of its inventory when a water main broke earlier this year. Preregistration tickets come with an exclusive pin and are $15 for adults and $10 for youth; kids under 12 get in for free.

Running Errands

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Tuesday, April 22, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant Lake Bowl

Running Errands is an experimental short play series where local writers, directors, and actors workshop new ideas. Each month features a new lineup of innovative projects. You can get a sneak peek at the featured artists on the Running Errands Instagram feed or skip that step for a fun night of surprises. Tickets are $10.

Naruto: The Symphonic Experience

What: Music, Movies
When: Tuesday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m.
Where: State Theatre

Experience Naruto‘s critically-acclaimed soundtrack played live by an orchestra. The music will be accompanied by iconic scenes from the anime playing on a massive screen. Tickets start at $41.05.

Taverns, Trinkets & Treasure

What: Community, Food & Drink
When: Wednesday, April 23, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Brühaven Craft Company

The folks at Dragons, Dungeons & Drinks are hosting “a casual fantasy market night where brews flow and wares glitter.” Expect local vendors selling handmade dice, potion soaps, jewelry, nerdy art, and more.

Speculations Event: Catherine Lundoff

What: Books
When: Wednesday, April 23, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: DreamHaven Books & Comics

Author Catherine Lundoff will be stopping by DreamHaven for a free reading. Her recent works include the Wolves of Wolf’s Point series, Out of This World: Queer Speculative Fiction Stories, and Unfinished Business: Tales of the Dark Fantastic. Lundoff is also the publisher at Queen of Swords Press.

Walker Art Center’s Art Club: Collage

What: Arts
When: Thursday, April 24, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Walker Art Center, Cargill Lounge

Get creative at the Walker Art Center’s weekly Art Club during the museum’s free Thursday nights. Explore different mediums and ideas through themed activities designed to be accessible for all ages and levels of experience. Materials are free while supplies last. This week features collage artmaking inspired by the current exhibit Kandis Williams: A Surface.

Varietopia with Paul F. Tompkins

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, April 24, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: The Fitzgerald Theater

Paul F. Tompkins’s variety show is coming to Minnesota with a showcase of contemporary comedy, music, and live entertainment. He’ll be joined by musical director Jordan Katz, the Varietorchestra, and surprise guests. Tickets start at $36.55.

St. Paul Art Crawl

What: Arts
When: Friday, April 25, through Sunday, April 27
Where: Multiple Locations

Check out various galleries and art showcases in St. Paul and enjoy the talents of local artists, live music, dance, and new media. This year’s spring art crawl will take place over three weekends, with this first weekend featuring artists in Ward 2’s West 7th, Lowertown, and West Side neighborhoods. See the website for a list of participating locations and access to free transit passes.

The Road So Far … The Road Ahead: Celebrating 20 Years of Supernatural

What: Convention
When: Friday, April 25, through Sunday, April 27
Where: Hyatt Regency Minneapolis

Creation Entertainment is bringing the stars of the Supernatural series to Minneapolis. This three-day convention will feature opportunities for autographs and photos as well as experiences including main stage panels, a PJ party, games, a cosplay contest, and the infamous karaoke night. Guests include Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Misha Collins, Mark Sheppard, Ruth Connell, and more. Single-day passes start at $55. Autographs, photos, and some experiences require the purchase of add-on tickets. There are also several tiered weekend packages available that include some add-ons within the price.

Midwest Poetry Mash-Up

What: Arts
When: Friday, April 25, at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, April 26, at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Open Book

Ten teams of poets will be slinging words in this head-to-head poetry slam competition. There will be four preliminary bouts before the Saturday-evening finals, and Saturday morning will kick off with a donut social and chapbook swap. Tickets are $25 for the entire weekend; individual bout and finals tickets are also available.

Independent Bookstore Day

What: Books
When: Saturday, April 26
Where: Independent bookstores everywhere

On the last Saturday in April, indie bookstores around the country celebrate Independent Bookstore Day with sales, author appearances, giveaways, and more. Check out our dedicated guide to what’s going on for Indie Bookstore Day in Minnesota.

Free Park Day

What: Community, Family, Sports & Fitness
When: Saturday, April 26, at 8:00 a.m.
Where: Minnesota State Parks

Four days a year, Minnesota State Parks offer free admission with no vehicle permits needed. This Saturday is one of those days. So get out there and explore the natural beauty across the state. Just be sure to dress and prepare for the weather, and note that extra amenities like rentals and special tours are not included. Check out the event page to learn more, find a park, and see some suggested itineraries.

Minnesota Historical Society’s Free Admission Day

What: Community, Family, Educational
When: Saturday, April 26, at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Multiple Locations

Explore one of Minnesota’s historical sites and museums free of charge this Saturday. Participating locations span the metro area and greater Minnesota, including the Mill City Museum, Minnesota History Center, Mille Lacs Indian Museum and Trading Post, Split Rock Lighthouse, and more. Teen Lit Con

What: Family, Conventions, Books, Education
When: Saturday, April 26 at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Two Rivers High School (Mendota Heights)

This annual event is a great opportunity for teens to meet up with authors for break-out sessions, book signings, workshops, and more. There will be authors in the exhibit hall for much of the day, with the headliners being Erin Entrada Kelly, Randy Ribay, Kyle Starks, and Nic Stone; see the website for details on specific authors and scheduling. This event is free, and concessions will be available for cash purchase throughout the day.

Nintendo Day

What: Gaming, Cosplay, Food & Drink
When: Saturday, April 26, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Boom Island Brewing Company

Enjoy an afternoon of Nintendo-themed activities and gaming at Boom Island Brewing. There will be free retro gaming hosted by PokéCon, a vendor market, special beers, game music spun by DJ Theology, and more. This is also a perfect opportunity to break out your Nintendo cosplay or favorite Nintendo-inspired look.

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show

What: Film, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, April 26, at 11:30 p.m.
Where: The Parkway

Watch a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the “longest-running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ shadow cast for the showing, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition. Doors open at 11:30 p.m. and tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, April 20 at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female-identifying (including trans women/femme) and nonbinary nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Smithsonian Associates Streaming Series–How the Sixties Shaped Today’s Politics

What: Educational
When: Monday, April 21, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Virtual via Zoom

The Smithsonian Institution, home to famed museums and world-class research centers, is bringing educational programs and art courses online for all to enjoy. At this event, explore the political and cultural history of the 1960s in the United States and how these past events impact today’s politics, including modern presidencies, polarizing culture wars, and ongoing rights movements. General-admission tickets are $25, and a discount is available for members. Check out the streaming series webpage to see the many other upcoming events this week.

GPS Creative Night

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event and a great opportunity to work on projects in great company.

Virtual Pub Quiz Trivia Night

Get your trivia on from the comfort of home with Geeks Who Drink’s free online trivia night. Prove your mettle, and maybe learn a little something!

Twin Cities Geek Art Club

The Twin Cities Geek art club meets every Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the Twin Cities Geeks Discord. Hop on voice or video and chat while you create art, then share your finished pieces on the #art-club channel! This event is open to all. Join the server by visiting twincitiesgeek.com/discord.

Weird and Wonderful Wednesday Watchalongs

Enjoy a free screening of an obscure film with Miss Emmy Martian and other cinephiles on Discord every Wednesday night.

Book Discussion of The Society of Guenevere by Deborah K. Vleck

What: Books
When: Saturday, April 26, at 1:30 p.m.
Where: Virtual via Zoom

The Rivendell Discussion Group of the Mythopoeic Society will be discussing The Society of Guenevere by Deborah K. Vleck, a dark academia novel full of twists where a gifted intellectual clashes against a powerful cabal that can destroy people’s minds. This event is free and open to all. Next month, the group will discuss the art of Pauline Baynes.
