Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, April 7, to Sunday, April 13.

In-Person Events

44th Annual Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival

What: Movies
When: Now through Sunday, April 13
Where: Various venues

The 44th annual Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival (MSPIFF) is a celebration of international cinema that will feature over 200 films and shorts from around the world. This year features a tribute to Ang Lee through a series of events with the director, including a screening of Brokeback Mountain with preshow conversation as well as a screening of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. For anyone looking for films with Minnesota connections, take a look at Folktales, Speak, and Or Something. Check out the website for the full list of films. Tickets are $17 per film for general admission; all-access passes and discounts are also available.

Triassic Parq: The Musical

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Now through Sunday, April 13
Where: LUSH Lounge ad Theater

Life finds a way in Triassic Parq, a retelling of Jurassic Park from the dinosaurs’ view, in “which chaos erupts when one dino in a female clan spontaneously becomes male.” This comedic ride of a musical explores themes of identity, sex, and religion through a new twist on a familiar classic. Tickets are $27–$37 and the show is recommended for ages 18 and up.

Pangea World Theater Presents: Rhinoceros

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Now through Saturday, April 19
Where: The Southern Theater

Over three acts, everyone except our central character, Berenger, turns into rhinoceroses. The show exploring themes of conformity, fascism, social responsibility, mob mentality, philosophy and morality. Tickets are $15–$50.

Free Yoga at Union Depot

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Monday, April 7, and Wednesday, April 9, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Union Depot

Get your yoga mat and water ready for a free yoga class at the beautiful Union Depot in St. Paul. This event is taught by Studio 9-to-5 in the Depot’s Waiting Room or in the North Plaza when the weather is nice. Monday’s class focuses on a total body sculpt workout, while Wednesday’s class is a less-intense general yoga for all levels. See the event page on the Union Depot website for more information.

WWE RAW

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Monday, April 7, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Target Center

Monday Night RAW returns to the Twin Cities for an action-packed night of pro-wrestling in the lead-up to Wrestlemania 41. The wrestling card for this event features Gunther, Jey Uso, AJ Styles, Rey Mysterio, Rhea Ripley, Liv Morgan, the New Day tag-team duo of Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston, and more. Tickets start at $55.90.

St. Paul Chess Enthusiasts

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Tuesday, April 8, 5:00 p.m.
Where: BlackStack Brewing

Enjoy chess or want to learn? Join other chess enthusiasts of all skill levels at this weekly gathering. Bring a chess set, if you have one. Beginners welcome. More opportunities to play chess are available from Uptown Chess.

Silent Book Club

What: Books, Food & Drinks
When: Tuesday, April 8, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Inbound Brew Co.

Grab your current read, pick up a drink, and join other book lovers for a night of quiet reading in good company at Inbound. Beer and nonalcoholic drinks will be available for purchase.

Nerd Nite: April Edition

What: Educational, Food & Drink
When: Wednesday, April 9, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Black Hart of Saint Paul

The organizers of Nerd Nite invite you out for a night of “nice drink, good company, and some cold. hard. facts.” Those cold, hard facts come in the form of monthly “nerdy TED talks” in which community members dive into a topic they are passionate about. April’s event has presentations on e-bikes, graph theory, and “Dictatorships, Stimulants, and Sleep Loss-Induced Psychosis.”

Walker Art Center’s Art Club

What: Arts
When: Thursday, April 10, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Walker Art Center, Cargill Lounge

Get creative at the Walker Art Center’s weekly Art Club during the museum’s free Thursday nights. Explore different mediums and ideas through themed activities designed to be accessible for all ages and levels of experience. Materials are free while supplies last. This week, the club is hosting guest artist Alexandra Beaumont for a hands-on textile workshop.

Reverend Matt’s Monster Science: Agent Elora Electric Battle Masterpiece

What: Comedy & Theater, Educational
When: Thursday, April 10 through Sunday, April 13 at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Bryant Lake Bowl

Reverend Matt’s Monster Science, a recurring comedic-lecture series with a focus on monsters, takes a detour this month with a new installment of the Agent Elora series. The four-night event will see Reverend Matt and Agent Elora face off against a villain, feature a monster fight of city-wrecking proportions, have a grimly monologuing vampire hunter, and be filled with the usual monster facts and jokes at the heart of Monster Science. VGM Con 2025: Dimensional Rift

What: Music, Gaming, Conventions
When: Friday, April 11, through Sunday, April 13
Where: Crowne Plaza Minneapolis West

Were some of your earliest and strongest musical memories formed through video games? Do you find yourself fascinated with the way that music can be used to enhance the interactive storytelling of games? Then this is the convention for you. VGM Con brings the worlds of music and video games together for a weekend of fun and learning. Expect live music, panels, workshops, and more, all focused on the ways that video games and music might come together. Full-weekend tickets start at $78; VIP and single-day tickets are also available.

The Fool’s Journey: A Tarot Art Exhibit

What: Arts
When: Friday, April 11 and Saturday, April 12, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: ALTR Gallery

The The Fool’s Journey exhibition showcases tarot-inspired art from over 20 local artists. The two-night opening event will also include tarot readings. Drinks will be available for purchase from the gallery’s neighbor, Norseman Distillery.

Minnesota Brick Convention

What: Convention, Family
When: Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13, at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Eagan Civic Arena

The Minnesota Brick Convention is a traveling LEGO fan event featuring special guests, hands-on activities, vendors, and LEGO displays. This year’s guests include Patrick Durham, Tom Jacobsen, Madison Rice, and Stephen Forthofer. Expect zones to play and build with bricks as well as displays of massive builds, life-size models, and mosaics. Tickets grant access to a three-hour session and are $14.99 in advance. A portion of proceeds benefit Creations for Charity, which donates LEGO sets to kids in need during the holiday season.

NerdinOut Con VI: Back to the Graham

What: Convention
When: Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13, at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Graham Arenas Park (Rochester)

NerdinOut Con returns to Rochester with another year of comics, special guests, cosplay, wrestling, and more! This year’s guests include David Howard Thornton, the Dudley Boyz, Deep Roy, Kat Cressida, and Ming Chen. Weekend passes are $25 and additional ticket options are available for kids, day passes, and VIP.

POP Cats Twin Cities 2025

What: Convention
When: Saturday, April 12, through Sunday, April 13, at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Union Depot

You and your feline friends can enjoy a weekend of cat-themed activities and shopping at the POP Cats convention. Activities include DIY cat wand toys, photo ops, art stations, a gaming zone, cat video cinema, vendor marketplace, and more. There will also be catios to meet and interactive with cats available for adoption. Cosplay and cat-inspired looks are encouraged! Weekend passes are $28 for adults or $18 for kids; day passes and bundles are also available.

The Muppets Drag Brunch

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Sunday, April 13, at 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Where: Union Rooftop

Enjoy a themed drag performance and a delicious meal at one of Flip Phone’s popular brunch events. This week is bringing the laughs with a hilarious tribute to the Muppets. Costumes and singing along are highly encouraged. Tickets are $20.28, and attendees must purchase an entree during the event.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, April 13 at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female-identifying (including trans women/femme) and nonbinary nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Get your trivia on from the comfort of home with Geeks Who Drink’s free online trivia night. Prove your mettle, and maybe learn a little something!

The Radium Era: Rise and Demise of of Radioactive Quackery

What: Educational
When: Tuesday, April 8, at 4:30 p.m.
Where: Virtual event

Author and historian Lucy Jane Santos will discuss popular radium products of the early 20th century, how they went from in vogue to feared, and the eventual discrediting of the industry. She will also be showing radium objects from her personal collection. Tickets are $12.

Queer Book Club

What: Books
When: Tuesday, April 8, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Virtual event

Discuss new books that are written by queer authors or that explore queer topics at this free monthly book club hosted by the Hennepin County Library. This month’s selection is Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers. Copies of the ebook and audio versions are available through the library website, while physical copies are available for checkout at the East Lake and Ridgedale libraries. Next month’s read will be Cantoras by Carolina De Robertis.

Zoom Discussion of Nghi Vo’s Siren Queen

When: Tuesday, April 8, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Virtual via Zoom

The North Country Gaylaxians book club (a local group that reads and discusses science fiction, fantasy, horror, and other speculative fiction with LGBTQ+ or similar content by LGBTQ+ authors) will be hosting a discussion of the book Siren Queen by Nghi Vo. Next month’s discussion will feature Mirrored Heavens by Rebecca Roanhorse.

Twin Cities Geek Art Club

When: Wednesday, April 9, at 7:00 p.m.

The Twin Cities Geek art club meets every Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the Twin Cities Geeks Discord. Hop on voice or video and chat while you create art, then share your finished pieces on the #art-club channel! This event is open to all. Join the server by visiting twincitiesgeek.com/discord.

Weird and Wonderful Wednesday Watchalongs

Enjoy a free screening of an obscure film with Miss Emmy Martian and other cinephiles on Discord every Wednesday night.

Smithsonian Associates Streaming Series–The Aerobiome: An Invisible Ecosystem

When: Thursday, April 10, at 5:45 p.m.
Where: Virtual via Zoom

The Smithsonian Institution, home to famed museums and world-class research centers, is bringing educational programs and art courses online for all to enjoy. At this event, author and New York Times columnist discusses his book Airborne: The Hidden History of the Life We Breathe and the invisible things that live in the air all around us. General-admission tickets are $25, and a discount is available for members.
