Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, May 12, to Sunday, May 18.

Although inclusion in This Week in Geek is not an official endorsement of any event or organizer, we do our best to feature events that appear safe, responsible, and consistent with our mission and values. In-Person Events

Free Yoga at Union Depot

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Monday, May 12, and Wednesday, May 14, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Union Depot

Get your yoga mat and water ready for a free yoga class at the beautiful Union Depot in St. Paul. This event is taught by Studio 9-to-5 in the Depot’s Waiting Room or in the North Plaza when the weather is nice. Monday’s class focuses on a total body sculpt workout, while Wednesday’s class is a less-intense general yoga for all levels. See the event page on the Union Depot website for more information.

Charlie Sellars Presents What We Can Do: A Climate Optimist’s Guide to Sustainable Living

What: Books
When: Tuesday, May 13, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Magers & Quinn

Local author Charlie Sellars presents his optimistic book on climate change. This guide can help maximize sustainability in any aspect of your life: “While no one can do everything, everyone can do something.” Event is free. Registration is recommended.

Nerd Nite: Twin Cities

What: Educational, Food & Drink
When: Wednesday, May 14, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Black Hart Bar, St. Paul

The organizers of Nerd Nite invite you out for a night of “nice drink, good company, and some cold. hard. facts.” Those cold, hard facts come in the form of monthly “nerdy TED talks” in which community members dive into a topic they are passionate about. May’s presentations are “Silver Screen Hotties,” “Get Undressed with Me (in 1740s),” and “Duck, Duck, So What?!”

MN Cuban Film Festival: A Night with the Rolling Stones

What: Movies
When: Wednesday, May 14, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Main Cinema

This week’s featured film is A Night with the Rolling Stones, a film about relationships, family issues, and change set against the excitement of an upcoming rock concert. A new Cuban Film Festival movie shows each Wednesday through June 4. Tickets are $14.

TC Trek Trivia: Pour Me Up a Shot of Aldebaran Whiskey, Ev’ry Body on the Ship Gettin’ Tipsy

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, May 14, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Hosted by Master Trekkie, TC Trek Trivia consists of five rounds: General Trek (questions covering all things Star Trek); Identify the Image; Ships, Technology, and Cultures; Complete the Quote; and a “Wild Card” round. Questions for each of these five rounds are drawn from all Star Trek television series and all 12 films. According to Master Trekkie himself, TC Trek Trivia is “all ages, no cover, food, drinks, and a whole lot of Trek!” Participants must pre-register.

Walker Art Center’s Art Club: Weaving

What: Arts
When: Thursday, May 15, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Walker Art Center, Bazinet Garden Lobby

Get creative at the Walker Art Center’s weekly Art Club during the museum’s free Thursday nights. Explore different mediums and ideas through themed activities designed to be accessible for all ages and levels of experience. Materials are free while supplies last. This week features using a mini loom to make a small object like a bookmark or coaster.

Euro Board Games

What: Gaming
When: Thursday, May 15, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Fox Den Board Game Cafe, Burnsville

Join Fox Den on Thursdays for a night of Euro/designer/hobby games. Newbies welcome.

Milkweed Presents: Found Ancestry hosted by K. Iver

What: Books
When: Thursday, May 15, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Open Book

K. Iver hosts a panel of authors, Dorothy Chan, Eli Erlick, and Danez Smith, as they explore the idea of found ancestry and how it has influenced their work. Free.

Quantum-Con

What: Convention
When: Friday, May 16, to Sunday, May 18
Where: Crowne Plaza, Minneapolis

Quantum-Con welcomes is a fan convention that welcomes all types of fans: sci-fi, fantasy, anime, horror, paranormal and more! Explore panels, hands-on workshops, live music, and lots of fellow geeks who share your passion. A weekend pass for ages 18+ is $60. Single-day passes and reduced admission for young adults and children are also available.

Art-A-Whirl

What: Arts
When: Friday, May 16, to Sunday, May 18
Where: Various locations in NE Minneapolis

Art-A-Whirl is the largest open artist studio tour in the country. Back for its 30th year, this year’s event includes over 100 locations and 1,600 artists. Art-A-Whirl is free and open to the public.

Cheers for Beers

What: Food & Drink
When: Friday, May 16, starting at 6:00 p.m.
Where: John P. Murzyn Hall, Columbia Heights

Enjoy unlimited samples from local and regional craft breweries and cideries, including nonalcoholic options. Attendees must be 21 or over. Tickets are $30 in advance, $35 at the door, and $15 for designated drivers.

Twin Cities Gamer Symphony Presents Beyond Pixels

What: Music
When: Friday, May 16, at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Humboldt High School, St. Paul

The spring concert of the Twin Cities Gamer Symphony Orchestra includes pieces from the soundtracks of Xenoblade Chronicles, World of Warcraft, Tetris, Runescape, and more. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

The Monster Ball

What: Nightlife
When: Friday, May 16, at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Ground Zero

Featuring all local Minnesota artists, the Monster Ball has something for everyone. Show up as your favorite monster and you may get to participate in the Dilettante Fashion Parade. Attendees must be 21 or over. Admission $15.

Puzzling Adventures Scavenger Hunt

What: Trivia, Family
When: Saturday, May 17, starting at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Puzzling Adventures (St. Paul)

Follow a self-guided tour to a series of locations where you must answer a question or solve a puzzle to get the next clue. Adventures are crafted to appeal to all ages, and almost all are wheelchair and stroller friendly. Race through for the quickest time or savor the experience at your own pace. Tickets are $39.99 per team.

Taylor Swift Drag Brunch

What: Theater & Comedy, Food & Drink
When: Saturday, May 17, at 10:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Where: Union Rooftop

Enjoy a themed drag performance and a delicious meal at one of Flip Phone’s popular brunch events. This week features all your favorite Taylor Swift songs. Costumes and singing along are encouraged. Tickets are $20.28 and attendees must purchase an entrée during the event.

Knights & Pints

What: Cosplay, Food & Drink
When: Saturday, May 17, starting at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Boom Island Brewing

A full day of all-things medieval, including knights in full armor, music by Loreweavers, a variety of vendors, and special themed beers. Costumes are encouraged but not required. Free.

Comics & Kegs

What: Comics, Food & Drink, Family
When: Sunday, May 18, starting at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Surly Brewing Company

Fun, drinks, and everything comics at Surly Brewing. Perfect for die-hard comic fans and newbies alike. Free and open to all ages.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, May 18 at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female-identifying (including trans women/femme) and nonbinary nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. GPS Creative Night

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event and a great opportunity to work on projects in great company.

Rebecca Roanhorse’s Mirrored Heavens

Hosted by the North Country Gaylaxians Book Club, this month’s discussion will be on Mirrored Heavens, the final book in Roanhorse’s Between Earth and Sky trilogy.

Twin Cities Geek Art Club

The Campfire at the Cyber Cave

Protospiel Online

Whether you are looking to try out developing games or a game designer with an idea to test, this weekend-long event is the place to be. Protospiel provides a moderated area on Discord with multiple voice and video channels for playtesting, including “Looking for a Game” and a Players Wanted area. Make new friends, expand your horizons, and try new stuff. Registration for the weekend is $60 for designers and $15 for testers.

Grumbles & Glimmers: The Poetry of Optimism and Pessimism

What: Books & Writing
When: Sunday, May 18, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Virtual via Zoom

In this creative writing workshop, join poet Leanne Moden to explore pessimism and optimism, what makes one hopeful or despair, and all those grumbles and glimmers that make life strange and complicated. Suitable for all ages and abilities. Tickets are £11.55 (about $15).
