Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, June 23, to Sunday, June 29.

In-Person Events

Shakespeare in Our Parks: All’s Well That Ends Well

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Now through Sunday, July 13
Where: Various venues

The Classical Actors Ensemble is back for its 11th summer of Shakespeare in Our Parks. This year the group is performing All’s Well That Ends Well, a comedy of fate, unrequited love, and self-discovery. These events are free and are performed at different parks throughout the state. Check out the website for the full list of performances, including locations and times.

Free Yoga at Union Depot

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Monday, June 23, and Wednesday, June 25, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Union Depot

Get your yoga mat and water ready for a free yoga class at the beautiful Union Depot in St. Paul. This event is taught by Studio 9-to-5 in the Depot’s Waiting Room or in the North Plaza when the weather is nice. Monday’s class focuses on a total-body sculpt workout, while Wednesday’s class is less-intense general yoga for all levels. See the event page on the Union Depot website for more information.

Northern Fire Dynamic Free Public Performance

What: Arts
When: Monday, June 23, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Powderhorn Park

Watch Minneapolis fire troupe Northern Fire Dynamic perform their latest choreography with the theme of “Ashes of Tomorrow.” This performance is free, but donations are encouraged.

Minneapolis Institute of Art Public Tours: Inspired by Books

What: Arts
When: Tuesday, June 24, at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

Take a specially curated tour through the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s collection as inspired by books. Each month’s tour will focus on a different book for inspiration, with June exploring Go Tell It on the Mountain by James Baldwin. Tours meet in the General Mills Lobby on the first floor. Additional times available on Thursday. Free.

Reclaiming Our Identities Two Spirit Powwow

What: Community
When: Tuesday, June 24, starting at 3:00 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis American Indian Center

Join New Native Theatre’s fourth annual powwow honoring our Native Two Spirit and LGBTQ+ community. Free and family-friendly, this event includes dancing, drumming, regalia, craft vendors, and a community feast.

Teen Writers’ Guild

What: Meetup, Books
When: Tuesday, June 24, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: St. Paul Public Library—Dayton’s Bluff

Every fourth Tuesday, teen writers can get together at the Dayton’s Bluff Library for encouragement, peer critiques, and opportunities to develop their craft. This meetup is free, with snacks and hot drinks provided.

Astounding Astrophysics: Superman Meets Newton and Einstein

What: Educational
When: Tuesday, June 24, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Tate Laboratory of Physics, UMN East Bank

Learn about the science behind Superman’s home planet, Krypton, exploding and Superman reversing time in the 1978 movie. Free to attend; parking is available for $1/hour.

2025 Wedge Live Cat Tour

What: Community, Educational
When: Wednesday, June 25, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Starting at Mueller Park

Wedge Live will be hosting the eighth annual tour of the Wedge neighborhood with a focus on its feline residents, with Susan Lynx as grand marshal. Free registration is available on Eventbrite.

KINFOLX

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Thursday, June 26, through Saturday, June 28
Where: Pangaea World Theatre

Visit Elsewhere and its ruling council in this audience-participation event. Part performance ritual, part community assembly, KINFOLX “reimagines survival as something less tragic and more chaotically fabulous.” Pay what you can.

Narrativity: A Convention for Story

What: Convention
When: Thursday, June 26, through Sunday, June 29
Where: Crowne Plaza Minneapolis West

Narrativity is a deep dive into the art and craft of storytelling. Join others who enjoy writing, science fiction and fantasy, and honing their craft for a weekend of discussions and fun. Beginners are welcome, but content is geared toward those with some experience. Masks are recommended. Admission at the door is $75.

Free Thursday Nights at the History Center

What: Educational, Family
When: Thursday, June 26, at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Minnesota History Center

Explore the Minnesota History Center’s exhibits including Our Home: Native Minnesota, Reframing Our Stories, Minnesota’s Greatest Generation, Weather Permitting, and Then Now Wow, with both free admission and free parking. Special events this evening include Library After Hours in the Gale Family Library and Summer Solstice Arts Activity in the Curiosity Studio.

Green Roof Poetry, Body

What: Arts
When: Thursday, June 26, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Walker Art Center, Wurtele Upper Garden

Enjoy live poetry readings on the themes of bodies, connection and autonomy. Also, board the Body Freedom for Every(Body) Truck, with over 200 artworks onboard around themes of autonomy when it comes to healthcare and individual identity. Free, but tickets can be reserved online in advance.

Lowertown Sounds: The New Standards and Friends

What: Music, Community
When: Thursday, June 26, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mears Park

Lowertown Sounds is bringing local music, food trucks, and Minnesota-made brews to Mears Park for free all summer long! This week features performances by Dr. Mambo’s Combo and Purple Funk Metropolis. Check out the event listing for the food-truck lineup and upcoming performances.

Meet at Mia: Pride in Concert

What: Arts
When: Thursday, June 26, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

Head over to the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s lawn on Thursdays throughout the summer for a free night of art, live performances, food trucks, and more. This week celebrates Bratpunk summer with a live performance by Minneapolis-based trio VIAL. Hands-on activities and food from ParraLily, too. The current exhibition Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beats and Alicia Keys can also be viewed for free with a museum membership, which anyone can sign up for at no cost.

Backyard Concert Series: Rap, Classical, Metal, Experimental, Pop, Oh My

What: Music
When: Thursday, June 26, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Squirrel Haus Arts

Each concert in this series includes a unique blend of genres created by local independent musicians. This final session includes the music of Ice Climber (psych/soul/grunge freakout), Carnage the Executioner (rapper/beatboxer), (ab)scheid (avant-metal), and Elena Stabile (disembodied melodies). Despite the series name, none of the concerts are actually in a backyard. Masks encouraged. Admission on a sliding scale from $0 to $50 per concert.

Legends of a Rainbow Realm: Pride Nerdlesque Revue

What: Theater & Comedy, Nightlife
When: Thursday, June 26, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Amsterdam Bar & Hall

Texas TeaCake$ hosts this extravaganza of defiantly made-over heroes, villains, and side-quests, celebrating every hue of the queer spectrum. At least 15 performers will enchant the stage with everything from high-flying circus feats to striptease. General admission tickets are $19.82, with reserved tables also available.

Twin Cities Pride Festival

What: Community, Family
When: Friday, June 27, through Sunday, June 29
Where: Loring Park

Gather with the LGBTQ+ community and allies in Loring Park for Twin Cities Pride. There will be hundreds of booths and dozens of food vendors, along with free musical performances and fun for the whole family. There are a variety of other Pride-related activities going on throughout the weekend, including the parade on Sunday. The Twin Cities Pride website is a great central location to find Pride events that may be relevant to your interests.

Midwest Bookish Fest

What: Books, Convention
When: Friday, June 27, through Sunday, June 29
Where: Minneapolis Mariott West, St. Louis Park

Find your next read at Midwest Bookish Fest. There will be local bookshops, attending authors, book-related vendors, and more. General admission tickets are $212.44; access to the signings and vendor hall only for $80.50.

Retro Pride Rooftop Drag Brunch

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, June 27, at 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Where: Union Rooftop

Enjoy a themed drag performance and a delicious meal at one of Flip Phone’s popular brunch events. This week kicks off Pride weekend with all things RETRO. Costumes and singing along are highly encouraged. Tickets are $20.28, and attendees must purchase an entree during the event.

American Craft Fest

What: Arts, Convention
When: Saturday, June 28, and Sunday, June 29
Where: Union Depot

Over 50 emerging artists along with many local arts partners come together to share regional craft culture. Shop their wares, make your own art in hands-on activities, and enjoy local beverages and food trucks. Free. Ticketed preview party available Saturday a.m.

Science of Agatha Christie

What: Books, Science & Technology
When: Saturday, June 28, at 3:00 p.m.
Where: The Thinking Spot

Writers and science geeks alike with enjoy this discussion of Agatha Christie’s work, from how the poisons work to the evolution of crime scene investigation to how isolated settings help explore the psychology behind her characters. Join Meg Hafdahl and Kelly Florence for this free event.

“Weird Al” Yankovic: Bigger and Weirder

What: Music, Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, June 28, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Treasure Island Amphitheater

See geeky comedy/music legend Weird Al Yankovic live playing both iconic hits and some never-performed-live-before favorites. Tickets start at $56. A bonus preparty with KS95 with chances to win tickets and upgrades start at 4:00 p.m.

Transvestite Soup Presents: The Rocky Horror Picture Show

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, June 28, and Sunday, June 29, at 11:30 p.m.
Where: The Parkway

Watch a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the “longest-running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ shadow cast for the showing, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition. Doors open at 11:30 p.m. and tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, June 29 at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female-identifying (including trans women/femme) and nonbinary nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Be sure to check out the Source calendar for additional events!

Dungeons & Dragons: How to Be a DM

What: Gaming
When: Sunday, June 29, at 2:00 p.m.
Where: The Curious Crow Company, Circle Pines

Learn the art of Dungeon Mastering, including creating a world, using a module, handling conflicts and more! Under 18 welcome with parent or legal guardian. Tickets are $19.30.

GPS Creative Night

Let your creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever your heart desires at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by the Geek Partnership Society. This is a free event and a great opportunity to work on projects in great company.

Virtual Pub Quiz Trivia Night

Get your trivia on from the comfort of home with Geeks Who Drink’s free online trivia night. Prove your mettle, and maybe learn a little something!

Smithsonian Associates Streaming Series—Exploring Gender Roles: Examining Knitting Artifacts from the Smithsonian Collection

What: Educational
When: Tuesday, June 24, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Virtual via Zoom

The Smithsonian Institution, home to famed museums and world-class research centers, is bringing educational programs and art courses online for all to enjoy. At this event, explore knitting as social commentary and how knitted artifacts reflect and define attitudes toward gender and sex. Ann Richards is a certified knitting instructor and has been teaching knitting at the Smithsonian Institution since 2001. General admission tickets are $35, and a discount is available for members. Greater Minnesota Queer History Virtual Game Night

When: Wednesday, June 25, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Virtual via Zoom

Join this interactive game night for the launch of the Greater Minnesota Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ History Map project. No prior history knowledge necessary to participate. Free, but registration is required to get the Zoom link.

Twin Cities Geek Art Club

The Twin Cities Geek art club meets every Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the Twin Cities Geeks Discord. Weird and Wonderful Wednesday Watchalongs

Open Book Neurodivergent Creative Writing Group

Writer Emily Dodd shares selected stories and poems followed by prompts as a starting point to your own creative writing, with opportunities to share your efforts if you choose. No experience necessary. Open to neurodivergent participants 18+. Free, but registration is required.

Jukebox Bingo: America Rocks (Independence Day) Edition

Bingo with a twist, where the numbers on your card are replaced with songs and trivia. This week’s theme is the music from the ’90s, spanning a wide range of genres, so there is something for everyone! Tickets are $17.85.
