Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, July 14, to Sunday, July 20.

In-Person Events

Free Yoga at Union Depot

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Monday, July 14, and Wednesday, July 16, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Union Depot

Get your yoga mat and water ready for a free yoga class at the beautiful Union Depot in St. Paul. This event is taught by Studio 9-to-5 in the Depot’s Waiting Room or in the North Plaza when the weather is nice. Monday’s class focuses on a total-body sculpt workout, while Wednesday’s class is less-intense general yoga for all levels. See the event page on the Union Depot website for more information.

Dungeons & Dragons Live

What: Theater & Comedy, Gaming
When: Tuesday, July 15, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Inbound BrewCo

Badwolf Adventure Studios is bringing its game masters out from behind their GM screens for a live one-shot night. The audience is invited to help shape the game by naming NPCs, influencing choices (for better or worse), and making a good-natured heckle or two. “Whether you’re a seasoned dice-slinger or just here for the drinks and drama, you’ll be swept up in an evening of improv, laughter, and storytelling mischief.”

Astounding Astrophysics: Here Comes the Sun

What: Educational
When: Tuesday, July 15, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Tate Laboratory of Physics, University of Minnesota

For this event in the Astounding Astrophysics series, Dr. Lindsay Glesener will discuss how the sun releases energy, its control over our “space weather,” how that impacts life on Earth, and what work the researchers at the University of Minnesota are doing to better understand it all. Free to attend; parking is available for $1/hour.

T Williams Presents Rewind: Lessons from Fifty Years of Activism

What: Books
When: Wednesday, July 16, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Magers & Quinn Booksellers

Theartrice “T” Williams has been a community leader, public servant, and consultant in Minnesota since the 1960s and has brought together communities, corporations, and political leaders to address issues around race, poverty, and social justice. His book, Rewind: Lessons from Fifty Years of Activism, is an instructive memoir in which he reflects on his life and experiences as an activist in the era of George Floyd. He is joined in conversation by author David Lawrence Grant.

Pundamonium: The Minneapolis Pun Slam

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Wednesday, July 16, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Club Underground at the Spring Street Tavern

Pundamonium is a pun slam—a competition of wordplay with 10 contestants, each given two minutes to make puns based on prompts they are given ahead of time. A few lucky audience members act as judges for the night, with their top four pun slingers going head to head in a final pun-off. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Minneapolis Movies in the Parks: The Fifth Element

What: Movies, Community
When: Wednesday, June 16, at 8:55 p.m.
Where: The Commons

Enjoy a night of community and movie magic under the stars! Movies start at dusk and are free and open to the public. Screening this week is The Fifth Element, a sci-fi adventure where an unwitting cab driver helps a mysterious, butt-kicking woman save the world from evil and destruction, starring Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, Gary Oldman, and Chris Tucker. Check out the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board calendar for a complete schedule of Movies in the Parks screenings.

Meet at Mia: Dog Day

What: Arts
When: Thursday, July 17, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

Head over to the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s lawn on Thursdays throughout the summer for a free night of art, live performances, food trucks, and more. This week invites canine friends to the lawn for pup cups, bandanas, dog trivia, and a dog-making metal craft. While dogs are not allowed in the museum, humans can take a tour that highlights dogs in the museum’s collection.

Twin Cities Tattoo Festival

What: Arts
When: Friday, July 18 through Sunday, July 20
Where: RiverCentre

Get your next nerdy ink at the Twin Cities Tattoo Festival. Over 200 local and national artists will be tattooing, as well as selling art, shirts, and more. Throughout the weekend there will also be tattoo competitions and live performances. Walk-in tattoos are available, but attendees are encouraged to book ahead of time if they are hoping for a tattoo from a specific artist. Check out the website for the schedule and artist information. Tickets are cash only at the door, with a weekend rate of $65 or a day rate of $30; kids aged 12 and under get in for free.

Candlelight Concert: The Best of Bridgerton on Strings

What: Music
When: Friday, July 18, at 6:30 p.m. and 8:45 p.m.
Where: The Westminster Presbyterian Sanctuary

Experience an atmospheric concert featuring the music from the hit Netflix series Bridgerton, reimagined for a string ensemble. Bridgerton-inspired looks are encouraged. Tickets start at $23. (Read: “Candlelight Concerts Offer a Unique Way to Experience Your Favorite Music”)

Music in the Parks: The Court Revelers

What: Music, Community, Family
When: Friday, July 18, at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Lake Harriet Bandshell

Enjoy the free Music in the Parks series as it continues through summer. This Friday features lively sea shanty pub songs from the Court Revelers. Check out the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board calendar for a complete schedule of Music in the Parks performances.

Gothess Skate Night

What: Sports & Fitness, Nightlife
When: Friday, July 18, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Twin Cities Skaters Studio

Lace up your skates for a night of rolling and dancing to your favorite goth music. For those who don’t skate or prefer their Gothess nights without wheels, there will also be a no-skate dance floor. Entry is $20.

CONsole Room Yard Sale Fundraiser

What: Community
When: Saturday, July 19, at 10:00 a.m.
Where: 7900 37th Ave. N, New Hope, MN 55427

Stop by the CONsole Room Yard Sale Fundraiser to find some new-to-you treasures and support a local Doctor Who convention at the same time. Expect a range of community-donated items like books, comics, costumes, action figures, and pretty much anything else (Doctor Who–related and beyond). And if you find yourself with too many things and no massive TARDIS to store them in, you can find information about how to donate items on the event page.

Connecting Conversations—Broadcasting Betty Crocker: How Early Radio Launched an American Icon

What: Science & Tech, Educational
When: Saturday, July 19, at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Pavek Museum (St. Louis Park)

Connecting Conversations is a series that explores “the past, present, and future of electronic communications” with guest lectures from topic experts. At this talk, General Mills archivist Sarah Crandall will discuss the history of Betty Crocker and how radio contributed to her popularity and status as an American Icon. This event is included with regular museum admission of $11.

Summer Market and Pop-Up Skate Park

What: Community, Sports & Fitness, Music, Food & Drink
When: Saturday, July 19, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Forgotten Star Brewing (Fridley)

Forgotten Star Brewing is hosting a collaborative market and pop-up skate park with 3rd Lair! There will be over 30 vendors, open skate time, free skateboarding lessons, and a best trick contest. The band A Little Too Short to Be Storm Troopers will also be performing covers from the iconic Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater soundtracks.

Kpop-Up MN Summer Market

What: Community, Music, Family
When: Saturday, July 19, at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Keyes Park (Columbia Heights)

K-pop fans can come together for an afternoon of themed activities, shopping, dance performances, and raffles. This free, fan-run event will include over 30 vendors, PC trading, random play dances, and opportunities to play the same variety-show games as your favorite idols. Twilight Drag Brunch

What: Theater & Comedy, Food & Drinks
When: Sunday, July 20, at 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
Where: Crave Rooftop

Enjoy a themed drag performance and a delicious meal at one of Flip Phone’s popular brunch events. This week revives the question of “Team Edward or Team Jacob?” in tribute to the Twilight franchise. Costumes and singing along are highly encouraged. Tickets are $20.28 and attendees must purchase an entrée during the event.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, July 20, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female-identifying (including trans women/femme) and nonbinary nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Minneapolis Sister Cities Day Celebration and Ice Cream Social

What: Community, Family, Food & Drink
When: Sunday, July 20, at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Nicollet Island Pavilion

Join the city of Minneapolis for a celebration of its international sister cities! This free event will feature multicultural entertainment, ice cream, and refreshments. Performers include Taiko Arts Midwest, Rafiki USA, Raices de Chile, and more. This year marks multiple milestone sister city anniversaries, which will be recognized by remarks from officials from each of the cities, including 45 years with Ibaraki City, Japan, 25 years with Eldoret, Kenya, and 25 years with Uppsala, Sweden.

Vilification Tennis Sucks: A Vampire Show

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Sunday, July 20, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Strike Theater

Vilification Tennis, a local structured-improv show focused on insult contests, returns for a night of killer comedy that aims the verbal stakes at pop culture’s wide array of sparkly, enthralling, and terrifying bloodsuckers. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

Andy Warhol’s Super-Works: The Pop Art Icon’s Superman Influence

What: Arts
When: Wednesday, July 16, at 4:30 p.m.

Andy Warhol may be best known for his works featuring Campbell’s soup cans, Brillo boxes, and celebrity portraits, but his Superman-inspired works also played an important role in his career and the pop art movement. In this webinar, learn about Warhol’s depictions of the Man of Steel and other comic artworks, the forgeries that appeared at the Museum of Modern Art, and his relationship with comic-style painter Roy Lichtenstein. The talk will be led by pop culture historian Arlen Schumer, author of The Silver Age of Comic Book Art.

Smithsonian Associates Streaming Series—Kierkegaard on the Madness of Mass Media

When: Thursday, July 17, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Virtual via Zoom

The Smithsonian Institution, home to famed museums and world-class research centers, is bringing educational programs and art courses online for all to enjoy. At this event, explore philosopher Søren Kierkegaard’s analysis and criticisms of mass communication from the 19th century and the striking parallels and relevance to modern concerns around algorithm-driven content in media-saturated societies. General admission tickets are $40, and a discount is available for members. Check out the streaming series webpage to see the many other upcoming events this week.

Sci-fi/Fantasy Book Club

Discuss new and interesting sci-fi and fantasy titles at this free book club hosted by the Hennepin County Library. July’s read is Running Close to the Wind by Alexandra Rowland. Next month’s read will be The Runes of Engagement by Tobias S. Buckell.
