Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, July 21, to Sunday, July 27.

In-Person Events

Free Yoga at Union Depot

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Monday, July 21, and Wednesday, July 23, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Union Depot

Get your yoga mat and water ready for a free yoga class at the beautiful Union Depot in St. Paul. This event is taught by Studio 9-to-5 in the Depot’s Waiting Room or in the East Plaza when the weather is nice. Monday’s class focuses on a total-body sculpt workout, while Wednesday’s class is less-intense general yoga for all levels. See the event page on the Union Depot website for more information.

WTF! Watch Terrible Films Club

What: Movies, Food & Drink
When: Monday, July 21, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 56 Brewing Taproom

If you’re a film buff who likes cheesy movies that are so-bad-they’re-kind-of-good, then this free club is for you. Every third Monday, catch a screening of a curated movie in 56 Brewing’s barrel room, while enjoying local brews. Check out The WTF Club’s Instagram for a preview of the upcoming movie, or just show up the night of to be surprised.

Minneapolis Institute of Art Public Tours: Inspired by Books

What: Arts
When: Tuesday, July 22, at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

Take a specially curated tour through the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s collection as inspired by books. Each month’s tour will focus on a different book for inspiration, with July exploring Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. Tours meet in the General Mills Lobby on the first floor. Similar tours are available at other dates and times.

Books & Bars: Listen for the Lie

What: Books, Food & Drink
When: Tuesday, July 22, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Urban Growler

Books & Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by former Minnesota Public Radio producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food, and social lubrication.” The book being discussed this month is Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera. Next month’s book is Yellowface by R.F. Kuang.

Teen Writers’ Guild Special Event: Color Blockprinting with Diana Eicher

What: Meetup, Books
When: Tuesday, July 22, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: St. Paul Public Library – Dayton’s Bluff

A special event for the Teen Writers’ Guild, join Diana Eicher to learn how to create color block prints. All materials provided. This meetup is free, with snacks and hot drinks provided.

Astounding Astrophysics: Gravitational Lensing and Dark Matter

What: Educational
When: Tuesday, July 22, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Tate Laboratory of Physics, University of Minnesota

For this event in the Astounding Astrophysics series, Dr. Patrick Kelly will discuss how his research uses gravity to bend light to discover previously unknown aspects of the universe. Free to attend; parking is available for $1/hour.

A Resistance of Witches

What: Books
When: Tuesday, July 22, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Magers & Quinn Booksellers

Author Morgan Ryan discusses her first novel, A Resistance of Witches, a book set in World War II where a witch abandoned by her coven has to complete an important quest to thwart Nazis. She is joined in conversation by local author Emma Törzs. Event is free, but registration is strongly encouraged.

Minneapolis Movies in the Parks: Wicked (Sing-along)

What: Movies, Community
When: Wednesday, July 23, at 8:50 p.m.
Where: The Commons

Enjoy a night of community and movie magic under the stars! Movies start at dusk and are free and open to the public. Screening this week is Wicked, a reimagining of the Land of Oz before Dorothy’s arrival featuring an all-star cast. Singing-along is encouraged. Meet at Mia: Hands On

What: Arts
When: Thursday, July 24, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

Head over to the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s lawn on Thursdays throughout the summer for a free night of art, live performances, food trucks, and more. This week features “Annotations,” an exhibit of photographs that have been altered by artists. Found photos will be available to experiment with your own alterations.

Walker Art Club: Summer Edition

What: Arts
When: Thursday, July 24, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Walker Art Center

The Walker Art Center’s Art Club gets a summer make-over, heading outdoors and adding music to the museum’s free Thursday nights. Explore different mediums and ideas through themed activities designed to be accessible for all ages and levels of experience. Materials are free while supplies last.

Spooky Campfire Tales with Paul Tremblay

What: Books, Family
When: Friday, July 25, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Wild Rumpus Books

Enjoy a campfire and s’mores while listening to Paul Tremblay and Anne Ursu telling spooky stories. Both authors will be available to sign books as well. Free and open to the public with limited seating.

Candlelight Concert: Coldplay vs. Imagine Dragons

What: Music
When: Friday, July 25, at 8:45 p.m.
Where: The Southern Theater

Experience an atmospheric concert featuring the music of Coldplay and Imagine Dragons. Tickets start at $49.50. (Read: “Candlelight Concerts Offer a Unique Way to Experience Your Favorite Music”)

Crash Course: Identifying Components

What: Science & Technology
When: Saturday, July 26, at 9:30 a.m. or 11:00 a.m. 
Where: Pavek Museum

Learn about the inner workings of electronic devices and the basics of electronics repair. This session will cover reading schematics and how to use them to identify components. All abilities welcome. Pay-what-you-can.

Jersey Shore Drag Brunch

What: Theater & Comedy, Food & Drinks
When: Saturday, July 26, at 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
Where: Union Rooftop

Enjoy a themed drag performance and a delicious meal at one of Flip Phone’s popular brunch events. This week’s theme is Jersey Shore, featuring a drag Snooki. Costumes and singing along are highly encouraged. Tickets are $20.28 and attendees must purchase an entrée during the event.

Hot ‘n Greasy Double Feature

What: Movies
When: Saturday, July 26, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: New Hope Cinema Grill

Catch two cult films: Infernal and The Greasy Strangler in a special one night only special event featuring an appearance by Sky Elobar. Afterparty at Outtakes Bar. Admission $25.

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, July 26, at 11:30 p.m.
Where: The Parkway Theater

Watch a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the “longest-running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ shadow cast for the showing, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition. Doors open at 11:30 p.m. and tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, July 27, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female-identifying (including trans women/femme) and nonbinary nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Smithsonian Associates Streaming Series – Are We Alone?: The Search for Life Beyond Earth

When: Tuesday, July 22, at 5:45 p.m.
Where: Virtual via Zoom

The Smithsonian Institution, home to famed museums and world-class research centers, is bringing educational programs and art courses online for all to enjoy. At this event, Kelly Beatty explores how life evolved on Earth and follows the efforts of astronomers to find Earth-like worlds orbiting other stars. He also discusses the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. General admission tickets are $25, and a discount is available for members. Twin Cities Geek Art Club

The Twin Cities Geek art club meets every Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the Twin Cities Geeks Discord.
