A Nightmare on Strip Street: A Burlesque Parody

What: Theater & Comedy

Where: Hollywood Theater

Burlesque gets a comedic horror-themed twist with this parody production from the folks behind The Empire Strips Back. The Scream Queens will “hilariously take down your favorite horror characters with expert precision, excessive sass, and extraordinary flair…that will have you laughing, blushing, and…screaming for more!” Tickets are $25–$89.

Forts! An Interactive Experience

Where: Children’s Theatre

“Imagine you’re surrounded by towering towers of cardboard boxes in the coolest attic you’ve ever seen. What will you build?” Don’t miss this choose-your-own-adventure presentation by the Children’s Theatre. Best for ages 2–10. Tickets are $30.

All-Ages Coding Club

What: Science & Technology
When: Monday, March 2, at 4 p.m.
Where: The Thinking Spot (Wayzata,MN)

Join this weekly, hands-on club to learn more about coding and how useful it can be in every day life. Topics include Python, HTML, CSS, JavaScript and AI coding agents. Recommended for ages 8 and up. Tickets are $15.38

Free Yoga at Union Depot

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Monday, March 2, and Wednesday, March 4, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Union Depot

Get your yoga mat and water ready for a free yoga class at the beautiful Union Depot in St. Paul. This event is taught by Studio 9-to-5 in the Depot’s Waiting Room or in the East Plaza when the weather is nice. Monday’s class focuses on a total-body sculpt workout, while Wednesday’s class is less-intense general yoga for all levels. See the event page on the Union Depot website for more information.

Uptown VFW Game Night Powered by 2D Con

Where: James Ballentine “Uptown” VFW – Post 246

Join in a variety of tabletop and board games provided by 2D Con and 2D Con: Unplugged, or bring your own. Food available from El Jefe Cocina.

Intermediate Storytelling

What: Theater & Comedy, Educational
When: Tuesday, March 3, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: American School of Storytelling

This class meets four Tuesdays in a row to assist storytellers in developing their stories to the next level. Tickets are $80.

Jam Night

What: Community, Meetup
When: Wednesday, March 4, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Noble Robot

This monthly get-together is a co-working night for creatives of all types—art, code, music, design, and more. “Jam Night has 1 rule: bring something to work on!” COVID vaccination is required but masks are not. Free.

Northwest Sportshow

What: Convention, Family
When: Thursday, March 5, through Sunday, March 8
Where: Minneapolis Convention Center

This exhibition of all things outdoor includes everything from hunting and fishing, to boating and RVs, to travel and apparel. This year features expanded focus on hunting and fishing, including a kid-friendly trout pond, as well as over 60,000 square feet dedicated to showcasing RVs. Walker Art Club: Octavia’s Collage

When: Thursday, March 5, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Walker Art Center

Get creative at the Walker Art Center’s weekly Art Club during the museum’s free Thursday nights. Explore different mediums and ideas through themed activities designed to be accessible for all ages and levels of experience. Materials are free while supplies last. This week, create a collage-based piece on the work of Octavia Butler.

Break My Game Playtesting

What: Gaming
When: Thursday, March 5, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: 2DHQ

During this monthly event, help design new board games by playtesting them in various states of development. Both designers and testers participate for free.

Precious and Adored Book Club

What: Books
When: Thursday, March 5, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Minnesota History Center

Precious and Adored by Lizzie Ehrenhalt and Tilly Laskey presents the correspondence between Rose Cleveland, sister of president Grover Cleveland, and Evangeline Simpson, a wealthy widow who would become the second wife of Henry Whipple. Their letters discuss their advocacy and humanitarian work, as well as their sexual attraction, romance, and partnership. Free, but registration is required.

The Monster Science Awards

When: Thursday, March 5, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant Lake Bowl

Reverend Matt’s Monster Science hosts the fifth annual awards to recognize the brightest stars of the Twin Cities alternative comedy scene. Tickets are $15 in advance or $18 at the door. Rage Against the Regime

What: Nightlife, Music, Community
When: Thursday, March 5, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Turf Club

Join Rage Against the Regime, a Minneapolis-based Rage Against the Machine tribute band, and their guests student 1 and Sean Anonymous, for this fundraising event to benefit the Immigrant Rapid Response Fund. Event is 21+. Tickets are $20.11.

MarsCon

What: Convention
When: Friday, March 6, through Sunday, March 8
Where: Hilton Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport

MarsCon has a little bit of something for everyone. Whether your preferred geek flavor is anime, gaming, cosplay, books, film, or science, you’re in for a treat. This year’s theme is “Sci-Fi of Yesteryear.” Come for special guests, such as actor Robert O’Reilly, Adrian Lee, and Heather Morris. Stick around for informative panels, crafting events, musical performances, anime screenings, a masquerade, and more. Check the website for schedule and registration details. Rates vary, but the whole weekend costs $70 for adults.

Abolish ICE: A Fundraiser for the People

What: Music, Community
When: Friday, March 6, at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Black Forest Inn and online

Enjoy several bands playing in the open air to raise awareness and funds to support local immigrants and mutual aid needs. Featuring Dropkick Murphys at 4:00 p.m. Free admission. Also available to stream live via AbolishICE.live or Meidas Touch.

Scream It Off Screen

What: Movies
When: Friday, March 6, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: The Parkway Theater

Scream It Off Screen is a short-film contest with an audience interaction element! Come together with other film nerds in one of the Twin Cities greatest revival theaters. Audiences will cry out “Gong!” or “Let it play!” in order to determine which films will be shown in full. Tickets are $23.66 in advance or $25 at the door. Onesie Rave at RaptureMN

What: Nightlife
When: Friday, March 6, at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Ground Zero Nightclub

While you don’t have to dress up to join this party, there’s an expansive list of what constitutes a “onesie,” including: track suit, unitard, bodysuit, fur suit, and full leather. This will be a flow-friendly dance floor, so bring your flow props if you have them. In addition to the dancing, there will be aerial acrobatics, burlesque, local vendors, a photo booth, and more. Entry to this 21+ event is $15.

Minnesota Campus Bird Hike

What: Sports & Fitness, Meetup
When: Saturday, March 7, at 9:00 a.m.
Where: Carpenter Nature Center, Hastings

Explore the Carpenter Nature Center’s Minnesota campus to identify birds with the assistance of local experts. Binoculars and field guides available. Registration required. Tickets $5, with discounts available.

Free First Saturday at Walker Art Center

When: Saturday, March 7, at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Walker Art Center and Virtual Event

This month’s theme is Kids’ Film Fair, featuring screenings of animated short films from around the world. Also enjoy the Walker Art Center’s current exhibitions, check out a film from the museum’s collection, or participate in family-friendly, film-inspired creative activities. Free tickets can be reserved in advance. At-home film screening also featured in the Virtual Events section.

First Saturday Science: Cosmetic Chemistry

When: Saturday, March 7, at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Jason R. Carter Science Education Center

First Saturday Science, a monthly program at Metro State, seeks to improve accessibility to science with open programs that can lead folks towards scientific careers, or just greater curiosity. This month, learn all about Cosmetic Chemistry. No RSVP required, though young people under the age of 18 should be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Glee Drag Brunch

What: Theater & Comedy, Food & Drink
When: Saturday, March 7, at 10:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.
Where: Union Rooftop

Enjoy a themed drag performance and a delicious meal at one of Flip Phone’s popular brunch events. This week, get your Gleek on and enjoy all your favorite Glee numbers. Costumes and singing along are highly encouraged. Tickets are $21.38, and attendees must purchase an entrée during the event.

Midnight Mayhem: The Blair Witch Project

When: Saturday, March 7, at 10:00 p.m.
Where: The Main Cinema

The Midnight Mayhem series returns with a screening of the cult classic The Blair Witch Project, which redefined the horror genre. Expect special surprises and giveaways with host Chaz Kangas throughout this fun community film night. Tickets are $13.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

When: Sunday, March 8, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female-identifying (including trans women/femme) and nonbinary nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Brains On! Live

What: Educational, Family
When: Sunday, March 8, at 1:00 p.m.
Where: The Fitzgerald Theater

Brains On, a popular podcast for kids, is presenting this science-themed show centered on how brains work using magic tricks, dance moves, and even a game show. 50% of net proceeds will be donated to Immigrant Rapid Response Network. Tickets are $37–62.

Egg Painting: A Folk Art Tradition

What: Educational
When: Sunday, March 8, at 1:00 p.m.
Where: HORA at the Landmark Center

Sundays in March, the Heritage Organization of Romanian Americans (HORA) is presenting seminars on the folk art tradition of egg painting. Learn how simple eggshells are transformed into works of art. The series will also explore other Eastern European egg decorating traditions. Attendees are invited to “discover how a humble egg becomes a canvas for storytelling across Eastern Europe.” This is a free event.

International Women’s Day Concert

Where: American Swedish Institute

Enjoy the music and dance traditions created by women who immigrated to the US from the Nordic region. Pay what you can, $1–$20.

825 Arts Minecraft Club

St. Paul’s 825 Arts hosts a virtual gathering space “by kids for kids” in Minecraft with a club meetup every Monday where teens and preteens can play, design, participate in theme challenges, and just hang out. The (Not-So) Young Adult Book Club

Adults can embrace their love of young-adult literature at this book club hosted on the first Monday of every month by Red Balloon Bookshop. Members choose the monthly book, receive discounts, and have opportunities to read advance reader copies (ARCs). The March book will be The Spirit Bares Its Teeth by Andrew Joseph White. This weekly series features a different scholar from around the area sharing their specialized knowledge without any tests or papers. This week features the authors of Tshuaj Ntsuab: A Compendium of Hmong Medicinal Plants, which blends traditional knowledge with Western science using plants common to Minnesota. Living Room Conversations: Let’s Talk About Women

The Smithsonian Institution, home to famed museums and world-class research centers, is bringing educational programs and art courses online for all to enjoy. At this day-long event, take a deep dive into the Declaration of Independence.
