Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, April 6, to Sunday, April 12.

In-Person Events

Free Yoga at Union Depot

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Monday, April 6, and Wednesday, April 8, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Union Depot

Get your yoga mat and water ready for a free yoga class at the beautiful Union Depot in St. Paul. This event is taught by Studio 9-to-5 in the Depot’s Waiting Room or in the East Plaza when the weather is nice. Monday’s class focuses on a total-body sculpt workout, while Wednesday’s class is less-intense general yoga for all levels. See the event page on the Union Depot website for more information.

Uptown VFW Game Night

What: Gaming
When: Tuesday, April 7, at 3:00 p.m.
Where: James Ballentine Uptown VFW

Join in on a variety of tabletop and board games from 2D Con’s library or bring your own games to share. Hosted by Military Veterans from 2D Con’s staff. This event is free and food is available for purchase from El Jefe Cocina.

45th Annual Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival

What: Movies
When: Wednesday, April 8 through Sunday, April 19
Where: Various venues

The 45th annual Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival (MSPIFF) is a celebration of international cinema that will feature over 200 films and shorts from around the world. This year features a tribute to Dean Cundey through a series of events with the cinematographer, including screenings of Escape from New York and Jurassic Park with Q&A sessions. For anyone looking for films with Minnesota connections, take a look at Uncle Roy, American Dream, and Echoes in the Night: The Search for Jacob Wetterling. Check out the website for the full list of films. Tickets are $17 per film for general admission; all-access passes, multi-ticket packs, and discounts are also available.

Panel Conversation: Relational Heritage and the Remaking of Museum Histories

What: Arts
When: Wednesday, April 8, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Weisman Art Museum

Museum collections have a long history rife with unethical practices. But what does it mean to inherit these collections? This panel discussion explores “heritage not as a static inheritance, but as a living, relational process” and “brings together artists, scholars, and cultural practitioners to consider how ecological and artistic perspectives can reframe our responsibilities to the materials and histories we hold.” Presented in conjunction with the traveling exhibition “Never Spoken Again: Rogue Stories of Science and Collections.”

Nerd Nite: April Edition

What: Educational, Food & Drink
When: Wednesday, April 8, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Black Hart of St. Paul

The organizers of Nerd Nite invite you out for a night of “nice drink, good company, and some cold. hard. facts.” Those cold, hard facts come in the form of monthly “nerdy TED talks” in which community members dive into a topic they are passionate about. April’s event has presentations on MSG, sumo, and lesbian assassins.

TC Trek Trivia: Brothers and Sisters…

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, April 8, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Hosted by Master Trekkie, TC Trek Trivia consists of five rounds: General Trek (questions covering all things Star Trek); Identify the Image; Ships, Technology, and Cultures; Complete the Quote; and a “Wild Card” round. Questions for each of these five rounds are drawn from all Star Trek television series and all 13 films. According to Master Trekkie himself, TC Trek Trivia is “all ages, no cover, food, drinks, and a whole lot of Trek!” This month’s theme is “Brothers and Sisters.”

On Cinema: The Certified “Five Bags of Popcorn” Tour

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Wednesday, April 8, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Fitzgerald Theater

The long-running podcast and web series On Cinema is on tour and will be making a stop in St. Paul. During the live show you can expect “a combination variety show and movie review panel, featuring the usual internal strife, grandstanding, and petty battles that are the hallmark of [Tim] Heidecker and [Gregg] Turkington’s on-screen On Cinema personas.” Tickets start at $49.51.

Walker Art Club: Mini Felted Balls

What: Arts
When: Thursday, April 9, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Walker Art Center

Get creative at the Walker Art Center’s weekly Art Club during the museum’s free Thursday nights. Explore different mediums and ideas through themed activities designed to be accessible for all ages and levels of experience. Materials are free while supplies last. This week, experiment with needle-felting.

Museum Nights: Club Science

What: Nightlife, Science & Tech
When: Thursday, April 9, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Science Museum of Minnesota

Enjoy a night of dancing and science with the Science Museum of Minnesota! They’ll be transforming their lobby into a club with a live DJ and dancefloor. Galleries will be open all night for exploration and feature live science performances. There will also be Omnitheater showings of the documentary Volcanoes throughout the night. Tickets are $55 for this 21+ event.

Candlelight: Tribute to Fleetwood Mac

What: Music
When: Thursday, April 9, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: The Westminster Presbyterian Sanctuary

Experience an atmospheric concert celebrating the music of Fleetwood Mac. The program will feature iconic songs like “Go Your Own Way,” “The Chain,” “Rhiannon,” and more. Tickets start at $23. Check out their website to see other Candlelight Concerts this week featuring the songs of Joe Hisaishi (Studio Ghibli), Queen, and Coldplay. Razia’s Shadow

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, April 10 and Saturday, April 11; various times
Where: The Hive Collaborative & Virtual (select performances)

In this puppet rock opera, Adakias seeks to bring harmony to the world after generations of darkness by reuniting the fractures wrought by their powerful and selfish ancestor. The show features “over a dozen unique puppet characters – including a vengeful satyr, a gigantic technicolor spider, a pair of reptilian Witch Sisters, a mechanical Mad Doctor, and more!” Tickets are available on a sliding-scale. In-person tickets are $12-35 and virtual tickets are $7-20. Livestream tickets include the option to watch the performance up to a week after the live show. Performances run through April 25.

St. Paul Art Crawl

What: Arts
When: Friday, April 10, through Sunday, April 12
Where: Multiple Locations

Check out various galleries and art showcases in St. Paul and enjoy the talents of local artists, live music, dance, and new media. This year’s spring art crawl will take place over three weekends, with this first weekend featuring artists in Ward 1, 3, and 4. See the website for a list of participating locations and access to free transit passes.

Minnesota Brick Convention

What: Convention, Family
When: Saturday, April 11 and Sunday, April 12, at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Eagan Civic Arena

The Minnesota Brick Convention is a traveling LEGO fan event featuring special guests, hands-on activities, vendors, and LEGO displays. This year’s guests include MandRproductions, Krystle Starr, ACPin, Mel Brown, Abbie Bocan, and more. Expect zones to play and build with bricks as well as displays of massive builds, life-size models, and mosaics. Tickets grant access to a three-hour session and are $15 in advance, or $20 at the door (if available). A portion of proceeds benefit Creations for Charity, which donates LEGO sets to kids in need during the holiday season.

Making the Presidency: John Adams and the Precedents That Forged the Republic

What: Educational
When: Saturday, April 11, at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Minnesota History Center & Virtual

Presidential historian and Executive Director of the George Washington Presidential Library Lindsay M. Chervinsky will be discussing her book Making the Presidency: John Adams and the Precedents That Forged the Republic, which explores the unique challenges faced by the second president, his navigation of those challenges, and how it all impacted the office for his successors. This event is part of the History Forum 250: Revisiting the Revolution event series exploring “the history and legacy of the American Revolution during our nation’s 250th anniversary.” Tickets are $20.

Dungeons & Dragons & Doughnuts

What: Gaming
When: Saturday, April 11, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Angel Food Bakery & Coffee Bar (St. Louis Park)

Get ready to roll some dice, slay some dragons, and eat some tasty doughnuts. Adventurers of all levels can join this Dungeons & Dragons game night with quests led by experienced game masters. Tickets are $23.18–33.85, which includes a doughnut, colorful set of dice, a premade character sheet, and entry into an artist giveaway, as well as bottomless cider, cold brew, and cocoa.

DeVotchka: Tribute to the Music of Little Miss Sunshine

What: Music
When: Saturday, April 11, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: First Avenue

DeVotchka is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Little Miss Sunshine with a concert tour that revisits their iconic film score. Tickets are $38.69.

Schitt’s Creek Drag Brunch

What: Theater & Comedy, Food & Drink
When: Sunday, April 12, at 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
Where: Union Rooftop

Enjoy a themed drag performance and a delicious meal at one of Flip Phone’s popular brunch events. This week, get a little bit of Alexis (and David, and Moira, and Johnny) at this tribute to Schitt’s Creek. Costumes and singing along are highly encouraged. Tickets are $20.28, and attendees must purchase an entrée during the event.

Science Sunday

What: Family, Science & Tech, Books
When: Sunday, April 12, at 10:30 a.m.
Where: The Thinking Spot (Wayzata)

Get your little ones excited about science through hands-on activities and a story time. This event is geared toward kids age four to seven. Tickets are free, but donations to help cover the cost of materials are welcome.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, April 12, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female-identifying (including trans women/femme) and nonbinary nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Urban Expedition: Uruguay

What: Educational
When: Sunday, April 12, at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Landmark Center

Explore global cultures during the 22nd season of Landmark Center’s Urban Expedition program. This free event celebrates Uruguayan culture with authentic cuisine, crafts, music, and dance. Presented in collaboration with the Minnesota-Uruguay Partners of the Americas.

Cole Sarar’s SciFi Reading Hour

What: Books
When: Sunday, April 12, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant Lake Bowl & Theater

This event will bring you new science fiction by local luminary Cole Sarar and special guest Cesar Montufar. This is your chance to take in local science-fiction literature, and travel to distant places and times. These tales will be further supported by the musical talents of Martin Law. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door.

825 Arts Minecraft Club

St. Paul’s 825 Arts hosts a virtual gathering space “by kids for kids” in Minecraft with a club meetup every Monday where teens and preteens can play, design, participate in theme challenges, and just hang out. Check out the website for information on joining their server, a technical FAQ, moderation and safety information for parents, and other Minecraft events.

entoL!VE–Revealing Insect Pest Pathways

Learn about insects and the science of invertebrates with the free entoL!VE webinar series. This week’s event features inorganic chemist Katharina Heinrich discussing her research on identifying and tracing insect paths using Stable Isotope Ratio Analysis (SIRA).

Virtual Makers Mornings

Join fellow makers at this morning social hour hosted by the American Swedish Institute. This free event is open to all kinds of crafts and is intended as a place to share projects, make some progress, and socialize. Registration is required.

The Plastic Age: How a Miracle Material Reshaped the Modern World

When: Tuesday, April 7, at 4:30 p.m.
Where: Virtual event

Learn about the history and modern state of plastic, from its original praises as a miracle invention that transformed the manufacturing industry to its environmental consequences and modern innovations in recycling and biodegradable alternatives. This webinar will be led by historian Lucy Jane Santos, who is the author of Half Lives: The Unlikely History of Radium and Chain Reactions: A Hopeful History of Uranium. Tickets are $20.58, which includes replay access for one week.

Comics & Conservation

Rosemary Mosco, author of the popular Bird and Moon comic, will be discussing how she makes complex ideas around bird behavior, conservation, and ecology accessible and engaging through visual storytelling and humor. Fun facts about Rosemary: “she judged a bird tattoo contest (twice!) and co-founded an event celebrating invertebrate butts.” This event is free (registration required) and will conclude with a reveal of BirdNote’s 2026 Photo Contest winners.

Ocean Encounters: Into the Abyss! Exploring the Mysteries of the Deep

When: Wednesday, April 8, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Virtual via Zoom and Facebook Live

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution will be discussing the technology that enables deep-sea exploration, how life has adapted to the harsh conditions, and what can be learned from mapping the seafloor. Guest speakers include deep-sea biologist Mackenzie Gerringer, ocean engineer Anna Michel, and marine geologist Dawn Wright. This is part of Ocean Encounters, a free event series that explores oceanic sciences. A recording of the event will be available to view on demand after the event on the website and YouTube, along with all of the previous videos in the series.

Twin Cities Geek Art Club

OLLI At-the-U Lecture Series: The Power of Ordinary Magic: How Do Children Overcome Adversity?

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is highlighting some of the latest research and discoveries from across the University of Minnesota with a lecture series. At this event, researcher Ann Mastens dives into “ordinary magic, “ a concept” which explains how resilience grows through everyday experiences shaped by both biology and environment.” She’ll discuss how this relates to adaptive skills development and why this research is important to supporting children, families, and overall communities. This event series is free, but registration is required

Smithsonian Associates Streaming Series—American Eclipse: A Gilded Age Race to Catch the Shadow of the Moon

When: Thursday, April 9, at 5:45 p.m.
Where: Virtual via Zoom

The Smithsonian Institution, home to famed museums and world-class research centers, is bringing educational programs and art courses online for all to enjoy. At this event, author and science journalist David Baron will dive into an “epic tale of ambition, failure, and glory” of the scientists who raced against each other and adventured into the American frontier in order to observe the solar eclipse of 1878 and make their mark on astronomy, including Thomas Edison, Maria Mitchell, and James Craig Watson. Soar Together Family Activities: Plants Take Flight

Every month the National Air & Space Museum hosts a family day that includes free at-home activities for learners of all ages. This month’s theme explores the connections between seeds and plants, bees, nature, and helicopters. Head over to the event page to get an email reminder for when the activities become available.

Eerie Tales of Wells & Springs: Changelings, Creatures, & Curses

Romancing the Gothic hosts weekly classes and events exploring gothic, romantic, and horror topics. This week features an exploration “of the darker folklore associated with wells and springs in England, Scotland,and Wales,” including ghosts, curses, and some questionable healing odds. Romancing the Gothic events are free to attend, but pay-what-you-can donations or patronage to support the series are encouraged.

Virtual Transmission

The popular Transmission dance night is hosting a weekly virtual music video stream. DJ Jake Rudh will be bringing New Wave, Alternative, and more ’80s-centric greats directly to your home. So, dance, dance, dance to the radio (or, in this case, Twitch stream).

Virtual Dungeons & Dragons for Teens

Online D&D for grades 6–12 hosted by the Ramsey County Library. All experience levels welcome. Registration required.
