Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, June 1, to Sunday, June 7.

Although inclusion in This Week in Geek is not an official endorsement of any event or organizer, we do our best to feature events that appear safe, responsible, and consistent with our mission and values. In-Person Events

Covers: Dolly & Friends

What: Music
When: Now through Sunday, June 7, various times
Where: Luminary Arts Center

Celebrate the hit songs and influence of Dolly Parton over decades with Cantus Vocal Ensemble. The concert includes songs by other iconic female artists like Indigo Girls, Cher, Beyoncé, and more. Tickets are pay what you can. The concert will be also be available for streaming beginning June 12.

Free Yoga at Union Depot

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Monday, June 1, and Wednesday, June 3, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Union Depot

Get your yoga mat and water ready for a free yoga class at the beautiful Union Depot in St. Paul. This event is taught by Studio 9-to-5 in the Depot’s Waiting Room or in the East Plaza when the weather is nice. Monday’s class focuses on a total-body sculpt workout, while Wednesday’s class is less-intense general yoga for all levels. See the event page on the Union Depot website for more information.

Music in the Parks: Necessary Diversion

What: Music, Community
When: Monday, June 1, at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Minnehaha Bandstand

Enjoy the free Music in the Parks series as it continues through summer. This week includes a performance by the cover band Necessary Diversion, whose cross-genre repertoire include rock, pop, dance, and country hits. Check out the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board calendar for a complete schedule of Music in the Parks performances.

The Pitt & Medical Drama Trivia

What: Trivia
When: Tuesday, June 2, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bald Man Brewing (Eagan)

Scrub in for question rounds from the attending trivia master at Bald Man Brewing. Expect about half of the questions to be about The Pitt, and the rest from other medical dramas including ER and Greys Anatomy.

Artability Creative Arts Series for 55+: Exquisite Corpses

What: Arts
When: Wednesday, June 3, at 1:00 p.m.
Where: V3 Sports

Engage in a playful drawing activity to collaboratively create a whimsical character, where individual pieces are put together and revealed at the end of the event. All supplies provided. Free.

Minneapolis Movies in the Parks: Grease

What: Movies, Community
When: Wednesday, June 3, at 8:55 p.m.
Where: Brackett Field Park

Enjoy a night of community and movie magic under the stars! Movies start at dusk, and are free and open to the public. Screening this week is Grease. Check out the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board calendar for a complete schedule of Movies in the Parks screenings.

Narrativity: A Convention for Story

What: Convention
When: Thursday, June 4, through Sunday, June 7
Where: Crowne Plaza Minneapolis West

Narrativity is a deep dive into the art and craft of storytelling. Join others who enjoy writing, science fiction and fantasy, and honing their craft for a weekend of discussions and fun. Beginners are welcome, but content is geared toward those with some experience. Masks are recommended. Admission at the door is $75.

Learn at LeDuc: Animals of the St. Croix River Valley

What: Science & Tech, Family
When: Thursday, June 4, at 6:oo p.m.
Where: LeDuc Historic Estate (Hastings)

Learn about the animals that live in the St. Croix River Valley that lies just northeast of the Twin Cities, and meet some of them up close. This all-ages event will be led by staff from the Carpenter Nature Center. Tickets are $15, or $12 for Dakota County Historical Society members.

How to Defend Books and Why with Danny Caine

When: Thursday, June 4, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Moon Palace Books

Author Danny Caine looks at the book banning movement, from its origins in the 1950s to its rapid growth in modern years, the activists who’ve stood up against them, and helpful takeaways for readers.

Once Upon a Time There Was Truth or, Why We Need Fairy Tales

What: Books
When: Thursday, June 4, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Magers & Quinn Booksellers

Fairy tales have long and storied history, but are they still relevant in modern times or are they just a fun entertainment escape? Author, folklorist, and University of Minnesota professor Jack Zipes discusses the enduring relevance and power of the genre and argues why we can’t live without them. This event is free, but registration is encouraged.

Reverend Matt’s Monster Science: Big in Japan

What: Comedy & Theater, Educational
When: Thursday, June 4, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant Lake Bowl

Reverend Matt’s Monster Science, a recurring comedic-lecture series with a focus on monsters, returns this month to explore the original Toho Godzilla film series and the various creatures depicted, as well as Godzilla Minus One and Japan’s two Godzilla-themed luxury hotel suites. Tickets are $15 in advance or $18 at the door. (Read: “Matt Kessen Wants to Make You Laugh about Monsters“.)

Geeky Networking

What: Community, Meetup
When: Friday, June 5, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: CHS Field

Geeks of all types are welcome to come network and find connections with others. This event features an outing to the St. Paul Saints Star Wars night. Tickets are $28.07 and include a reserved seat, a lightsaber, and the option to do Jedi training in the centerfield concourse.

Scream It Off Screen

What: Movies
When: Friday, June 5, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: The Parkway Theater

Scream It Off Screen is a short-film contest with an audience interaction element! Come together with other film nerds in one of the Twin Cities greatest revival theaters. Audiences will cry out “Gong!” or “Let it play!” in order to determine which films will be shown in full. Tickets are $18 in advance or $25 at the door. Heated Twilight: A Heated Rivalry + Twilight Dance Party

What: Nightlife
When: Friday, June 5, at 9:00 p.m.
Where: First Avenue

Flip Phone is throwing a themed dance party for fandom-favorite romances Heated Rivalry and Twilight. There will also be live Brolesque and drag performances by Locky Brownlie, Sasha Cassadine, Starr Dust, and Hunky Dory. Tickets are $32.49.

Hello Kitty Cafe Truck

What: Food & Drink
When: Saturday, June 6, at 9:45 a.m.
Where: Rosedale Center

The official Hello Kitty food truck returns to Minnesota this weekend, so make sure to take this opportunity to grab a variety of cute treats and merch while supplies last.

Free First Saturday at Walker Art Center

What: Arts, Family
When: Saturday, June 6, at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Walker Art Center

This month’s theme is Community Love, a celebration of local artists and their work. Also enjoy the Walker Art Center’s current exhibitions, check out a film from the museum’s collection, or participate in family-friendly creative activities. Free tickets can be reserved in advance.

Minnesota Comic Book Association (MNCBA) SpringCon

What: Convention
When: Saturday, June 6, at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Minnesota State Fairgrounds, Education Building

The Minnesota Comic Book Association, successor organization to the Midwest Comic Book Association, hosts its spring convention, featuring comics creators and vendors, panel discussions, an art auction, and more. Stop by the Twin Cities Geek table to say hello and pick up your geek swag. (“Read: Introducing the Minnesota Comic Book Association (MNCBA)”)

Prince Rooftop Drag Brunch: Celebration Weekend

What: Theater & Comedy, Food & Drinks
When: Saturday, June 6 and Sunday, June 7, at 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
Where: Crave Rooftop

Enjoy a themed drag performance and a delicious meal at one of Flip Phone’s popular brunch events. This week celebrates the life and legacy of Prince. Costumes and singing along are highly encouraged. Tickets are $18 and attendees must purchase an entrée during the event.

Train Days 2026

When: Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7, at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Union Depot

Head down to the Union Depot for a weekend all about trains! Free activities include train equipment tours, kids craft and coloring kits, model trains, contests, a Union Depot exhibit, games, and more. There will also be a vendor market and food trucks on site with items available for purchase.

Maker Fest

What: Science & Tech, Family
When: Saturday, June 6, at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Science Museum of Minnesota

The Science Museum of Minnesota is hosting their first annual Maker Fest to celebrate the creativity, learning, and innovation that’s such a vital part of the work done in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Expect hands-on activities, demonstrations, and conversations with local makers that explore both the technical and artistic sides of the creation process. Programming partners include the Children’s Theatre Company, Film North, Weavers Guild of Minnesota, Urban Boat Builders, Free Geek, and more. This event is included with regular museum admission.

Midnight Mayhem: Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy

What: Movies
When: Saturday, June 6, at 10:00 p.m.
Where: The Main Cinema

The Midnight Mayhem series returns with a screening of Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy, an absurd comedy skewering the pharmaceutical antidepressant industry and irony of the 1990s from cutting-edge sketch comedy team behind the TV series Kids in the Hall. Expect special surprises and giveaways with host Chaz Kangas throughout this fun community film night. Tickets are $13.

Grand Old Day 2026

What: Family, Community, Food & Drink, Music
When: Sunday, June 7, at 8:00 a.m.
Where: Grand Avenue, St. Paul

Greet the summer with the Grand Old Day festival in St. Paul! Expect a wide variety of food vendors, live music, family-friendly activities, a parade, festival gardens, and more. Musical performers include the Gully Boys, The Plastic Constellations, Bunny Blood, and many more. Walking down Grand Avenue and taking part in many activities is free, but entry to music stages and the 21+ festival gardens requires a music pass, which are $10 to $30.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, June 7, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female-identifying (including trans women/femme) and nonbinary nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Virtual Events

825 Arts Minecraft Club

When: Monday, June 1, at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Virtual via Minecraft and Discord

St. Paul’s 825 Arts hosts a virtual gathering space “by kids for kids” in Minecraft with a club meetup every Monday where teens and preteens can play, design, participate in theme challenges, and just hang out. Check out the website for information on joining their server, a technical FAQ, moderation and safety information for parents, and other Minecraft events.

The (Not-So) Young Adult Book Club

When: Monday, June 1, at 6:30 p.m.

Adults can embrace their love of young-adult literature at this book club hosted on the first Monday of every month by Red Balloon Bookshop. Members choose the monthly book, receive discounts, and have opportunities to read advanced reader copies (ARCs). Virtual Makers Mornings

Join fellow makers at this morning social hour hosted by the American Swedish Institute. This free event is open to all kinds of crafts and is intended as a place to share projects, make some progress, and socialize. Registration is required.

Gaming Wednesdays for Teens: Virtual Gaming

Weekly gathering to play online-board and video games for grades 6–12. Hosted by the Ramsey County Library. Registration required.

Our Future on Mars?

Join the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum for a discussion about the challenges and potential rewards of human exploration on Mars, as well as how information from the Viking landers that touched down 50 years ago paved the way for later rovers and how both are helping to inform exploration planning.

Twin Cities Geek Art Club

Smithsonian Associates Streaming Series—Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks: Grandmasters of Comedy

The Smithsonian Institution, home to famed museums and world-class research centers, is bringing educational programs and art courses online for all to enjoy. At this event, take a look back at the iconic careers and achievements of the late great Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks with media historian Brian Rose. General-admission tickets are $35, and a discount is available for members. Check out the streaming-series webpage for the many other upcoming events this week.

Convention from your Couch: Sean Maher

Get a little taste of the convention experience right from home with the Convention from your Couch series from Momentus. Each event features a fan-driven Q&A panel, autographs, and a limited amount of meet and greet spots. This installment features actor Sean Maher, whose roles include Dr. Simon Tal on Firefly, Shrapnel on Arrow, the voice of Nightwing in several DC animated films, and more. Tickets are $15–110.

Joanna Baillie: Gothic Plays and Psychological Horror

When: Saturday, June 6, at 4:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
Where: Virtual event

Romancing the Gothic hosts weekly classes and events exploring gothic, romantic, and horror topics. This week explores the works of pioneering playwright Joanna Billie, who was an acclaimed writer in the 1800s but is mostly unknown in modern times. The talk will focus on her innovative Plays on the Passion series, its gothic tones, and what poises her for a modern comeback. Romancing the Gothic events are free to attend, but pay-what-you-can donations or patronage to support the series are encouraged.

Virtual Transmission

The popular Transmission dance night is hosting a weekly virtual music-video stream. DJ Jake Rudh will be bringing New Wave, Alternative, and more ’80s-centric greats directly to your home. So, dance, dance, dance to the radio (or, in this case, Twitch stream).

Convention from your Couch: Wil Wheaton
