Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, June 22, to Sunday, June 28.

In-Person Events

Minneapolis Music in the Parks

What: Music, Community
When: Now through Friday, July 3
Where: Various parks around Minneapolis

Enjoy the free Music in the Parks series as it continues through summer. At least one group featured every day. Check out the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board calendar for a complete schedule of Music in the Parks performances.

Free Yoga at Union Depot

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Monday, June 22, and Wednesday, June 24, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Union Depot

Get your yoga mat and water ready for a free yoga class at the beautiful Union Depot in St. Paul. This event is taught by Studio 9-to-5 in the Depot’s Waiting Room or in the East Plaza when the weather is nice. Monday’s class focuses on a total-body sculpt workout, while Wednesday’s class is less-intense general yoga for all levels. See the event page on the Union Depot website for more information.

Mahjong Workshop

What: Gaming
When: Monday, June 22, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Boom Island Brewing Company

This introduction to American mahjong will include everything you need to understand the fundamentals. Cost $60. All game supplies provided during class.

Public Tour: Inspired by Books

What: Arts, Books
When: Tuesday, June 23, at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

Take a specially curated tour through the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s collection as inspired by books. Each month’s tour will focus on a different book for inspiration, with June exploring The River We Remember by William Kent Krueger. Tours meet in the General Mills Lobby on the first floor.

Books & Bars: Parable of the Sower

When: Tuesday, June 23, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Urban Growler

Books & Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by former Minnesota Public Radio producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food, and social lubrication.” The book being discussed this month is Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler. Next month’s book is Beautyland by Marie-Helene Bertino.

Teen Writers’ Guild

What: Meetup, Books
When: Tuesday, June 23, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: St. Paul Public Library–Dayton’s Bluff

Every fourth Tuesday, teen writers can get together at the Dayton’s Bluff Library for encouragement, peer critiques, and opportunities to develop their craft. This meetup is free, with snacks and drinks provided.

Minneapolis Movies in the Parks: K-Pop Demon Hunters Sing-Along 

What: Movies, Community
When: Wednesday, June 24, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: The Commons

A sunset showing of K-Pop Demon Hunters will be preceded by “music, dancing, karaoke, local vendors, and a sunset sing-along under the Downtown skyline.” Free admission. Costumes encouraged.

TC Queer Transplants Meetup

When: Wednesday, June 24, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Queermunity

New to the area? Drop by this monthly meetup for “a low-pressure hangout focused on sharing resources and fostering genuine connections.”

Costumed Figure Drawing Co-op

What: Arts
When: Wednesday, June 24, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: ALTR Gallery

Stretch those drawing muscles with other artsy folks at this costumed figure-drawing event. Models will be dressed in Renaissance festival garb or fantasy-inspired costumes and hold a variety of poses throughout the night. Attendees should plan on bringing their own supplies, and there is a list of suggested (and banned) items on the event page. Tickets are $20, or $15 for students; scholarships are available.

Nate Pedersen Presents Pseudoscience

What: Books
When: Wednesday, June 24, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Magers & Quinn Booksellers

Local author and historian Nate Pedersen will introduce his latest book: “From the easily disproved to the wildly speculative, to straight-up hucksterism, Pseudoscience is a romp through much more than bad science—it’s a light-hearted look into why we insist on believing in things such as Big Food, astrology, and the existence of aliens.” Free, but registration required.

Mo Collins is Wigging Out!

What: Theater & Comedy, Food & Drink
When: Thursday, June 25, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant Lake Bowl

Local actress Mo Collins (MADtv, Parks and Rec) will perform “improvised monologues based off audience suggestion and wig choices.” Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door. Full restaurant and bar service available.

St. Paul Deaf Con

What: Convention, Gaming, Community
When: Friday, June 26 through Sunday, June 28
Where: Charles Thompson Memorial Hall

St. Paul Deaf Con is a gaming convention for users of American Sign Language. The weekend-long event is hosted by the St. Paul Deaf Club and will include a mix of role-playing games, card games, and board games. Tickets are $45 for the weekend or $25 per day. Note that this convention is held exclusively in ASL and is intended for fluent signers. Check out the website for additional information as well as an add-on tour of the Twin Cities on Thursday.

Weekly Dungeons & Dragons

What: Gaming
When: Friday, June 26, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Dreamers Vault, St. Louis Park

All experience levels welcome to enjoy D&D at this weekly gathering. $5 per player.

Twin Cities Pride Festival

What: Community, Family
When: Saturday, June 27, and Sunday, June 28
Where: Loring Park

Gather with the LGBTQ+ community and allies in Loring Park for Twin Cities Pride. There will be hundreds of booths and dozens of food vendors, along with free musical performances and fun for the whole family. There are a variety of other Pride-related activities going on throughout the weekend, including the parade on Sunday. The Twin Cities Pride website is a great central location to find Pride events that may be relevant to your interests.

Shakopee Comic Con

What: Convention
When: Saturday, June 27, at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Canterbury Park Event Center, Shakopee

Stop by this first-time convention featuring comic dealers, toy vendors, a cosplay event, and more. General admission is $10 with kids under 12 free.

Free Admission Day at Minnesota Historical Sites

What: Educational, Family
When: Saturday, June 27, at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Various locations around Minnesota

Explore any of Minnesota’s 13 historical sites during one of four times each year that admission fees are waived. See event link for specific sites and open hours.

Wigs & Rainbows Drag Brunch

What: Theater & Comedy, Food & Drinks
When: Saturday, June 27, at 10:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.
Where: Crave Rooftop

Enjoy a themed drag performance and a delicious meal at one of Flip Phone’s popular brunch events. This week enjoy a Pride theme and the dress code is wigs! Costumes and singing along are highly encouraged. Tickets are $22.48 and attendees must purchase an entrée during the event. Be sure to check out the many other events Flip Phone is sponsoring during Pride week, including more drag brunches, dance parties, and a beer garden.

S.T.E.A.M. Saturdays: Broadcasting Day

What: Science & Technology
When: Saturday, June 27, at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Pavek Museum of Electronic Communication

Learn about how radio is broadcasted and learn about careers in broadcasting. Regular adult admission is $12; free for students under 18 and Pavek Museum Members. Be sure to also check out It Takes Two, an add-on activity for two people creating a working paper circuit. It Takes Two is $30 per pair and registration in advance is recommended due to limited supplies.

Fort Snelling State Park: Beavers and History

What: Educational, Sports & Fitness
When: Saturday, June 27, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Fort Snelling State Park

First, learn about why our world is Better with Beavers at the Thomas C. Savage Visitor center from noon to 1:00 p.m. Then, join in a one-hour History Hike to learn about the history of the land and its connection to modern-day issues. Come early at 10 a.m. to learn about and view Wily Woodpeckers. No registration required for any of the events. Vehicle permit required to access the park.

Greenharbor LARP Amtgard Outdoor Park Day

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Saturday, June 27, at 1:00 p.m.
Where: River Park, Brooklyn Park

Play games and face off in battle with other live-action roleplay (LARP) enthusiasts. This free event is hosted by Greenharbor LARP, a local chapter of the global medieval-fantasy combat LARP organization Amtgard. New players are encouraged to join in on the fun and all equipment is provided for free.

Will Steger: The Expedition Gear That Made the Impossible Possible

What: Educational
When: Saturday, June 27, at 2:00 p.m.
Where: Minnesota History Center

Will Steger and Julie Hignell will discuss the kind of gear required to safely navigate the harsh conditions and hazards during his polar expeditions. The presentation will include examples of actual equipment used and a Q&A session. Admission to the History Center is free on this day, but this presentation is pay-what-you-will with a suggested value of $15. Other Will Steger events this week include a film screening of After Antarctica and a brunch featuring recipes from The Steger Homestead Kitchen Cookbook.

Ready Set Switch LARP Playtest

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, June 27, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Merriam Park Library

Test out this in-development LARP that explores what it is like to live with plurality, “a type of neurodivergence where multiple people/identities/consciousnesses collectively share a single body,” by having shared roles and switching scenes to simulate the feelings of disorientation. Room for 7–15 players, and beginners are welcome. May involve a lot of walking. Free, but registration required. N95 masks required.

Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Saturday, June 27, at 11:30 p.m.
Where: The Parkway

Watch a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the “longest-running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ shadow cast for the showing, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition. Doors open at 11:30 p.m. and tickets are $14.43 in advance or $15 at the door.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, June 28, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female-identifying (including trans women/femme) and nonbinary nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Trivia Mafia at Fulton Taproom

825 Arts Minecraft Club

St. Paul’s 825 Arts hosts a virtual gathering space “by kids for kids” in Minecraft with a club meetup every Monday where teens and preteens can play, design, participate in theme challenges, and just hang out. Check out the website for information on joining their server, a technical FAQ, moderation and safety information for parents, and other Minecraft events.

Virtual Makers Mornings

Join fellow makers at this morning social hour hosted by the American Swedish Institute. This free event is open to all kinds of crafts and is intended as a place to share projects, make some progress, and socialize. Registration is required.

Disneyland and the Rise of Automation

Roland Betancourt traces how Disney transformed factory automation and war technology to create entertainment parks and how these attractions served to allay fears about new technologies. Tickets are $30 with a discount for members of the Smithsonian.

Dial-A-Story for Adults

Living Room Conversations: Unity and Politics

Living Room Conversations strives to facilitate conversations about important issues between people of different backgrounds and political affiliations. Conversations are carefully crafted to foster connection and understanding. This session will focus on the concept of unity, on a personal, community, and national level, and what we might gain or lose in working towards unity. The Healing Power of Meditation

Smithsonian Associates Streaming Series—The Climate History of Earth

The Smithsonian Institution, home to famed museums and world-class research centers, is bringing educational programs and art courses online for all to enjoy. At this event, learn all about the climate history of the Earth, including “how rapid and surprising past climate changes have been.” General-admission tickets are $45, and a discount is available for members. Dictating Dads and Incestuous Italians: Introducing Mary Shelley’s Mathilda

Romancing the Gothic hosts weekly classes and events exploring gothic, romantic, and horror topics. This week explores the themes gender, hellish imagery, and incest in Mary Shelley’s Mathilda and her use of Gothic extremes to reveal new perspectives on patriarchy. Romancing the Gothic events are free to attend, but pay-what-you-can donations or patronage to support the series are encouraged.
