Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, June 8, to Sunday, June 14.

Although inclusion in This Week in Geek is not an official endorsement of any event or organizer, we do our best to feature events that appear safe, responsible, and consistent with our mission and values. In-Person Events

Free Yoga at Union Depot

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Monday, June 8, and Wednesday, June 10, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Union Depot

Get your yoga mat and water ready for a free yoga class at the beautiful Union Depot in St. Paul. This event is taught by Studio 9-to-5 in the Depot’s Waiting Room or in the East Plaza when the weather is nice. Monday’s class focuses on a total-body sculpt workout, while Wednesday’s class is less-intense general yoga for all levels. See the event page on the Union Depot website for more information.

The Moth Open Mic StorySLAM

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Monday, June 8, at 7:30 p.m.
Where: The Parkway Theater

Monthly StorySLAM where anyone can tell a true five-minute story at the open mic. This month’s theme is “Holiday Gone Wrong.” Tickets are $20 and only available online.

Witch Club Satan

What: Music
When: Monday, June 8, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Amsterdam Bar & Hall

Appearing with Patriarchy, Witch Club Satan is “an occult, feminist Black Metal band forged in raw energy and defiance.” Event is 18+. Tickets are $32.49.

Monthly Cribbage Tournament

What: Gaming, Food & Drink
When: Tuesday, June 9, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Fulton Taproom

Bring your board and enjoy a game (or five) of cribbage. All ages and skill levels welcome. Prizes awarded both for success and getting skunked spectacularly. Food & drink available with Happy Hour specials immediately preceding the tournament.

Buffalo Show–Two Spirit Edition

What: Theater & Comedy, Food & Drink
When: Tuesday, June 9, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Bryant Lake Bowl

“Honoring our Two Spirit relatives for Pride Month, featuring music, drag, poetry and more.” Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Full restaurant and bar service available in the theater.

Monty Python’s Spamalot

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Wednesday, June 10, through Sunday, June 14
Where: Ordway Music Theater

Monty Python’s classic Spamalot comes to the stage at the Ordway. Tickets start at $45 and are going fast.

Art Across Generations: Draw It, Build It

What: Arts
When: Wednesday, June 10, at 1:00 p.m.
Where: V3 Sports

This monthly workshop is for pairs of youth and adults 55+ to work together on a project. This month, one participant imagines an original character or creature and the other brings it into reality in clay. Free.

Nerd Nite Out

What: Educational, Food & Drink
When: Wednesday, June 10, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Black Hart of St. Paul

The organizers of Nerd Nite invite you out for a night of “nice drink, good company, and some cold. hard. facts.” Those cold, hard facts come in the form of monthly “nerdy TED talks” in which community members dive into a topic they are passionate about. The topics for this month have not yet been announced.

Queer Book Club: Spent: A Comic Novel

What: Books
When: Wednesday, June 10, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Brackett Park

Join Moon Palace Books for discussion of Spent by Alison Bechdel. Everyone is welcome, even if you barely read the book. In case of bad weather, meet at Quatrefoil Library. See event listing for details for updates on event location.

TC Trek Trivia: To Manufactured Triumph!

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, June 10, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Driftwood Char Bar

Hosted by Master Trekkie, TC Trek Trivia consists of five rounds: General Trek (questions covering all things Star Trek); Identify the Image; Ships, Technology, and Cultures; Complete the Quote; and a “Wild Card” round. Questions for each of these five rounds are drawn from all Star Trek television series and all 12 films. According to Master Trekkie himself, TC Trek Trivia is “all ages, no cover, food, drinks, and a whole lot of Trek!” Free, but you must pre-register to play.

Minneapolis Movies in the Parks: The Fifth Element

What: Movies, Community
When: Wednesday, June 10, at 9:00 p.m.
Where: The Commons

Enjoy a night of community and movie magic under the stars! Movies start at dusk, and are free and open to the public. Screening this week is The Fifth Element. Check out the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board calendar for a complete schedule of Movies in the Parks screenings.

America’s 250th Lecture Series: Supreme Court from 1987 to Present: Rehnquist and Roberts at Lawshe

What: Educational
When: Thursday, June 11, at 6:oo p.m.
Where: Lawshe Memorial Museum

In recognition of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Dakota County Historical Society is presenting a series of lectures exploring different aspects of our national government. This installment looks at how the Supreme Court has changed over the past 40 years as well as what the future might look like. Tickets are $10 for general admission or $5 for DCHS members; ticket packages for multiple events in the series are also available.

Lab Partners: Cryogenics

What: Science & Technology, Food & Drink
When: Thursday, June 11, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Fulton Taproom

The Science Museum of Minnesota and Fulton Taproom are collaborating on a new series showcasing various science topics. This session focuses on liquid nitrogen and what neat things one can do with its freezing temperatures.

The Girls Will Be Okay Book Launch

What: Arts
When: Thursday, June 11, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Shir Tikvah (Minneapolis)

Author and former Twin Cities Geek contributor Linnea Peterson is launching their debut novel, a “nerdy, interfaith queer YA romance.” There will be a conversation with fellow author JR Dawson followed by Q&A and book selling and signing. (Read: “The Girls Will Be Okay Is a Minnesota Slice-of-Life Queer Romance”)

Guillotine City

What: Arts
When: Thursday, June 11–Sunday, June 14 at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Open Eye Theatre

“A factory machinist is courted by two opposing political leaders: will she choose socialist revolution, charismatic politics, or a secret third path?” This play written by Marge J. Buckley and presented by the queer- and trans-led Commutator Collective is a “darkly comic neo-noir set in a not-so-distant future of the Twin Cities.” Watch for our review, coming soon.

Friday Art-Making in the Garden

When: Friday, June 12, at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Minneapolis Sculpture Garden

The Walker Art Center’s weekly Art Club goes outside for the summer. Explore different mediums and ideas through themed activities designed to be accessible for all ages and levels of experience. Materials are free while supplies last. Instructions available in both English and Spanish. This week’s theme is corn husk dolls and their significance in Haudenosaunee culture and history.

Music in the Parks: Panatics or the C Notes

What: Music, Community
When: Friday, June 12, at 7:00 p.m. or 7:30 p.m.
Where: Minnehaha Bandstand or Lake Harriet Bandshell

Enjoy the free Music in the Parks series as it continues through summer. This week choose between the world-music sounds of Panatics, a steel-drum band performing at Minnehaha, and the C Notes, a rhythm & blues/soul group performing at Lake Harriet. Magic Across America! Starring Illusionist Josh Farley

What: Theater & Comedy
When: Friday, June 12, at 7:30 p.m.
Where: American School of Storytelling

Josh Farley (“Penn & Teller: Fool Us”, “Celebrities of Magic”, and “Masters of Illusion Live!”) will bring his unique blend of comedy, storytelling, and magic to town for one night. Tickets are $21.80. An additional add-on VIP experience prior to the show is $13.64 and includes a private Meet & Greet, a short close-up magic show, and Q&A session.

Cloud 9 Con

What: Convention
When: Saturday, June 13, and Sunday, June 14
Where: Crossroads Center, St. Cloud

Check out this first-time event centered around pop culture at the Crossroads Center in St. Cloud. Promising “pop culture, anime, video gaming, art, books, comics, collectible card games, table top gaming, toys, and more,” Cloud 9 Con will be accessible during mall hours.

American Craft Fest

What: Arts, Convention
When: Saturday, June 13, and Sunday, June 14
Where: Union Depot

Over 50 emerging artists along with many local arts partners come together to share regional craft culture. Shop their wares, make your own art in hands-on activities, and enjoy local beverages and food trucks. Free. Ticketed preview party available Saturday a.m.

Chappell + Charli + Sabrina Drag Brunch

What: Theater & Comedy, Food & Drinks
When: Saturday, June 13, at 10:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.
Where: Union Rooftop

Enjoy a themed drag performance and a delicious meal at one of Flip Phone’s popular brunch events. This week enjoy the music of Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX and Chappell Roan. Costumes and singing along are highly encouraged. Tickets are $21.98 and attendees must purchase an entrée during the event.

Greenharbor LARP Amtgard Outdoor Park Day

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Saturday, June 13, at 1:00 p.m.
Where: River Park, Brooklyn Park

Play games and face off in battle with other live-action roleplay (LARP) enthusiasts. This free event is hosted by Greenharbor LARP, a local chapter of the global medieval-fantasy combat LARP organization Amtgard. New players are encouraged to join in on the fun and all equipment is provided for free.

Club Science: Pride

What: Nightlife, Science & Technology, Food & Drink
When: Saturday, June 13, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Science Museum of Minnesota

A Pride dance at the Science Museum featuring DJ Hays, emcee Nur-D, and Dick Von Dyke. Special activities include a DIY slime bar, Science Live performances, and local meteorologists Mike Autustyniak and Adam Del Rosso discuss “what it’s like being Out in the Storm.” The galleries will also be open to explore. Event is 21+ and tickets are $55.

Dungeons & Dragons & Doughnuts

What: Gaming
When: Saturday, June 13, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Angel Food Bakery & Coffee Bar, St. Louis Park

Get ready to roll some dice, slay some dragons, and eat some tasty doughnuts. Adventurers of all levels can join this Dungeons & Dragons game night with quests led by experienced game masters. Tickets are $33.85, which includes a doughnut, colorful set of dice, a premade character sheet, and entry into an artist giveaway, as well as bottomless cider, cold brew, and cocoa.

Family Day: Rock the Cradle

When: Sunday, June 14, at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

Family Day is a free monthly event at the Minneapolis Institute of Art that gives the young and the young at heart an opportunity to check out performances, hands-on activities, tours, and more. This weekend’s theme is “Rock the Cradle,” an event aimed at children 2 to 10 and co-sponsored by The Current and Children’s Theatre Company.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, June 14, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female-identifying (including trans women/femme) and nonbinary nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Manga Club: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Vol. 5 and Vol. 6

When: Sunday, June 14, at 4:00 p.m.
Where: Next Chapter Booksellers

Discuss a new manga title every month at Next Chapter Booksellers. This free manga book club also provides tasty Japanese snacks and discounts on manga purchases in the store. Check out the event page for more information. For June, the read of choice is Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Vol. 5 & Vol. 6 by Hayao Miyazaki.

825 Arts Minecraft Club

St. Paul’s 825 Arts hosts a virtual gathering space “by kids for kids” in Minecraft with a club meetup every Monday where teens and preteens can play, design, participate in theme challenges, and just hang out. Check out the website for information on joining their server, a technical FAQ, moderation and safety information for parents, and other Minecraft events.

Join fellow makers at this morning social hour hosted by the American Swedish Institute. This free event is open to all kinds of crafts and is intended as a place to share projects, make some progress, and socialize. Registration is required.

Zoom Book Discussion of The Nightland Express

The North Country Gaylaxians book club (a local group that reads and discusses science fiction, fantasy, horror, and other speculative fiction with LGBTQ+ or similar content by LGBTQ+ authors) will be hosting a discussion of the book The Nightland Express by J. M. Lee. Next month’s discussion will feature A Market of Dreams and Destiny by Trip Galey.

Dial-A-Story for Adults

Smithsonian Associates Streaming Series—The Evolutionary Story of Human Sleep

The Smithsonian Institution, home to famed museums and world-class research centers, is bringing educational programs and art courses online for all to enjoy. At this event, learn about how sleep has changed as humans have evolved and how those pattern changes then supported further evolution. The Need for Speed

The National Air and Space Museum is showcasing a variety of aircraft from those designed for speed to those whose purpose requires them to fly “just right.” Online presentations include videos and hands-on demonstrations for all ages. Free.

Amelia Edwards’s Ghost Stories and Dark Tourism with Emma Liggins

When: Saturday, June 13, at 4:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
Where: Virtual event

Romancing the Gothic hosts weekly classes and events exploring gothic, romantic, and horror topics. This week explores the work of unconventional British writer Amelia Edwards and her use of the tropes of dark tourism. Romancing the Gothic events are free to attend, but pay-what-you-can donations or patronage to support the series are encouraged.

Virtual Transmission

The popular Transmission dance night is hosting a weekly virtual music-video stream. DJ Jake Rudh will be bringing New Wave, Alternative, and more ’80s-centric greats directly to your home. So, dance, dance, dance to the radio (or, in this case, Twitch stream).
