Minneapolis Music in the Parks

When: Now through Monday, September 7
Where: Various parks around Minneapolis

Enjoy the free Music in the Parks series as it continues through summer. At least one group featured every day. Check out the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board calendar for a complete schedule of Music in the Parks performances.

Free Yoga at Union Depot

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Monday, July 20, and Wednesday, July 22, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Union Depot

Get your yoga mat and water ready for a free yoga class at the beautiful Union Depot in St. Paul. This event is taught by Studio 9-to-5 in the Depot’s Waiting Room or in the East Plaza when the weather is nice. Monday’s class focuses on a total-body sculpt workout, while Wednesday’s class is less-intense general yoga for all levels. See the event page on the Union Depot website for more information.

WTF! Watch Terrible Films Club

What: Movies
When: Monday, July 20, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 56 Brewing

If you’re a film buff who likes cheesy so-bad-they’re-kind-of-good movies, this free club is for you. Every third Monday, catch a screening of a curated movie in 56 Brewing’s barrel room, while enjoying local brews and food-truck bites. Check out The WTF Club’s Instagram for a preview of the upcoming movie, or just show up the night of to be surprised.

Minneapolis Institute of Art Public Tours: Inspired by Books

What: Arts
When: Tuesday, July 21, at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art

Take a specially curated tour through the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s collection as inspired by books. Each month’s tour will focus on a different book for inspiration, with July exploring The Art Spy: The Extraordinary Untold Tale of WWII Resistance Hero Rose Valland by Michelle Young. Tours meet in the General Mills Lobby on the first floor.

Greek Mythology Theme Trivia

What: Trivia, Food & Drink
When: Tuesday, July 21, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Badger Hill Brewing

Teams of up to six compete to see who knows the most about the Greek pantheon and its antics.

Costumed Figure Drawing Co-op

What: Arts
When: Wednesday, July 22, at 6:15 p.m.
Where: ALTR Gallery

Stretch those drawing muscles with other artsy folks at this costumed figure-drawing event. Models will be dressed in Renaissance festival garb or fantasy-inspired costumes and hold a variety of poses throughout the night. Attendees should plan on bringing their own supplies, and there is a list of suggested (and banned) items on the event page. Tickets are $20, or $15 for students; scholarships are available.

MC Chris with Swell Rell

What: Nightlife, Music
When: Wednesday, July 22, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Turf Club

MC Chris, known for his character MC Pee Pants on Adult Swim’s Aqua Teen Hunger Force, is also a full-time touring rapper and his music “is the widely accepted soundtrack to nerd culture.” He is appearing with hip-hop artist Swell Rell. The show is 21+ and tickets are $32.49.

Science on Tap: Paleontology

What: Educational, Food & Drink
When: Thursday, July 23, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Indeed Brewing

Scientists from the Science Museum of Minnesota are heading to the taproom to help you learn something new while you enjoy a tasty brew. Each free event in the series will feature a different topic, with this installment exploring paleontology, from dinosaurs of Montana to crocodiles of North Dakota.

Minneapolis Movies in the Parks: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

What: Movies, Community
When: Thursday, July 23, at 8:50 p.m.
Where: Phillips Park

Enjoy a night of community and movie magic under the stars! Movies start at dusk and are free and open to the public. Screening this week is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the animated adventure sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Summer Friday Night Car Shows

What: Community, Family
When: Friday nights through September 18, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Downtown North St. Paul

Stroll downtown North St. Paul with plenty of shopping and food while appreciating classic cars and live music. Free.

Diversicon 33

What: Convention
When: Friday, July 24, through Sunday, July 26
Where: Crowne Plaza Minneapolis West

Diversicon is a speculative-fiction convention aimed at helping Minnesota’s sci-fi community more closely reflect Minnesota’s cultural diversity. This event is a project of SF Minnesota, and includes special guests, parties, and more. This year’s guests include authors Peg Kerr and Adam Stemple as well as posthumously honoring Homer and Hugo Gernsback. Registration is $55 at the door, or $15 for kids ages 5–11.

July Star Party and Moth Week Observation

What: Science & Technology
When: Friday, July 24, at 9:30 p.m.
Where: Bell Museum

We stand at the edge of an endless cosmic ocean, and Star Party is an opportunity to gaze into infinity with high-powered telescopes, a planetarium program, and hands-on activities. This Star Party is a free event and provides a great opportunity for folks of all ages to explore space. For a bonus activity this month, see the night-time insects and how they interact with UV lights.

Sixth Annual South Minneapolis Comic Book Crawl

What: Comics
When: Saturday, July 25, at 9:00 a.m.
Where: South Minneapolis (various locations)

Check out a wide variety of local comic shops and dealers for a fun-filled day with thousands of comics and unique deals. See the Comic Vikings website for a map of participating businesses and their hours.

Twin Cities Board Game Marathon

What: Gaming
When: Saturday, July 25, at 10:00 a.m.
Where: 2D Con HQ

Join the 2D Con community for an all-day gaming marathon. Bring your favorite games along to share or try something new from 2D Con’s gaming library. Tickets are $5.

Greenharbor LARP Amtgard Outdoor Park Day

What: Sports & Fitness
When: Saturday, July 25, at 1:00 p.m.
Where: River Park (Brooklyn Park)

Play games and face off in battle with other live-action roleplay (LARP) enthusiasts. This free event is hosted by Greenharbor LARP, a local chapter of the global medieval-fantasy combat LARP organization Amtgard. New players are encouraged to join in on the fun and all equipment is provided for free.

Romantasy Ball

What: Nightlife, Food & Drink
When: Saturday, July 25, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Central Mix

The Romantasy Ball features “a world of bookish magic” and includes ballroom dancing lessons, popular dance music, featured authors, tarot readings, henna, and more. Costumes encouraged. Event is 18+ and tickets are $37.10 with a VIP pass available for $60.71.

Lord of the Rings Drag Brunch

What: Theater & Comedy, Food & Drinks
When: Sunday, July 26, at 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
Where: Crave Rooftop

Enjoy a themed drag performance and a delicious meal at one of Flip Phone’s popular brunch events. This week, enjoy a campy take on Lord of the Rings while munching on second breakfast. Costumes and singing along are highly encouraged. Tickets are $20.98 and attendees must purchase an entrée during the event.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, July 26, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics and Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female-identifying (including trans women/femme) and nonbinary nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Trivia Mafia at Fulton Taproom

Every Sunday evening, enjoy a couple hours of trivia along with some good food and local beer.

825 Arts Minecraft Club

St. Paul’s 825 Arts hosts a virtual gathering space “by kids for kids” in Minecraft with a club meetup every Monday where teens and preteens can play, design, participate in theme challenges, and just hang out. Check out the website for information on joining their server, a technical FAQ, moderation and safety information for parents, and other Minecraft events.

Virtual Makers Mornings

Join fellow makers at this morning social hour hosted by the American Swedish Institute. This free event is open to all kinds of crafts and is intended as a place to share projects, make some progress, and socialize. Registration is required.

Smithsonian Associates Streaming Series—The World of Fungi: An Introduction

When: Tuesday, July 21, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Virtual via Zoom

The Smithsonian Institution, home to famed museums and world-class research centers, is bringing educational programs and art courses online for all to enjoy. At this event, mycologist David Hibbett discusses the fundamentals of fungi: what they are, how they live, and the ways fungi shape the ecosystems around them. General-admission tickets are $35, and a discount is available for members. Check out the streaming series webpage to see the many other upcoming events this week.

Gaming Wednesdays for Teens: Virtual Gaming

Sigmund Freud: The Radical Thinker Who Shaped Modern Psychology

The Summer of ’85 and the New Phenomenon of Noctilucent Clouds

This month’s topic from the Vectis Astronomical Society is the discovery of noctilucent clouds in 1885 and what we have learned about them since then. Presented by Mark Zalcik, who has been tracking the phenomenon for 38 years. Suggested donation of £3 (about $4USD).

Evil Women I Have Loved: The Enduring Appeal of Murder Ladies

Romancing the Gothic hosts weekly classes and events exploring gothic, romantic, and horror topics. This week, Dr. Sam Hirst explores “the long history of murderous sapphic or sexually ‘transgressive’ women exploring how these figures have been and continue to be read with queer communities and through a queer lens.” Romancing the Gothic events are free to attend, but pay-what-you-can donations or patronage to support the series is encouraged.

Virtual Transmission

The popular Transmission dance night is hosting a weekly virtual music-video stream. DJ Jake Rudh will be bringing New Wave, Alternative, and more ’80s-centric greats directly to your home. So, dance, dance, dance to the radio (or, in this case, Twitch stream).

Virtual Dungeons and Dragons for Teens
