Minnesota Is Getting More New Bookstores—and a New Home for an Old Favorite

It’s been a busy time in Minnesota bookstore news.
The Bookstore in Pine City, north of the Twin Cities, had its grand opening on April 9, 2022. Owner Dana Volkers Phillips will be selling new and used books for all ages along with toys, puzzles, and board games. And in May, Bluebird Books is set to open in Detroit Lakes, where former elementary school teacher Amy Erickson will sell new children’s, teen, and adult books. On the list of new bookstores in the state, they join the Thinking Spot, which opened in Wayzata in November, and Four Pines Bookstore, which came to Bemidji last summer.
Meanwhile, owner Don Blyly of Uncle Edgar’s Mystery Bookstore and Uncle Hugo’s Science Fiction Bookstore, which burned down in 2020, announced at the beginning of April that he’d closed on a new location at 2716 East 31st Street. The hope is to open in June 2022, but you can follow the ongoing GoFundMe campaign or Facebook page for updates.
