Lisa Freitag has been a geek since age 13, when the original Star Trek was on network TV every Thursday night. She was in the science club and avoided talking to anyone by reading constantly. Those books, mostly science fiction and fantasy, barely satisfied her geeky instincts until age 28, when she accidentally discovered science-fiction conventions. She moved to the Minneapolis area in 1999 to marry DreamHaven Books—or, rather, Greg Ketter, the owner of DreamHaven Books. Together they have attended hundreds of cons, including Worldcons in Europe, Australia, and Japan.

Other fannish activities have included running dealer’s rooms, displaying photography and jewelry in con art shows, ranting about medical accuracy in science fiction and fantasy at panels, and writing regularly for a fannish amateur press association (APA). Lisa spent way too many years playing World of Warcraft badly with the appropriately named guild Posthumous Heroes. Recently she has developed a passion for anime and manga.

Outside fandom, she graduated from college and medical school and practiced pediatrics in a variety of locations. After 25 years, she retired to get a master’s degree in bioethics from the University of Minnesota. Her thesis, Extreme Caregiving: The Moral Work of Raising Children with Special Needs, was published in 2018 by Oxford University Press.
